By Micah MacGregor on June 29, 2014

Sometimes our schedules are too busy to sit and relax, however I am hoping to show you that having a great deal of free time, isn’t essential to riding your body of stress.  Through incorporating these various foods and beverages into your diet, you can achieve relaxation, without having to shave hours out of your day.

1. Start your morning with a bowl of oatmeal.

The rate at which the body breaks down oatmeal is much slower than that of fruit, cereal or coffee.  Since it takes the body longer to breakdown oatmeal, you will feel full longer as well as sustaining your body with an important element to create serotonin.  Oatmeal contains complex carbohydrates that stimulate the body’s production of serotonin.  Serotonin paired with the dopamine, essential relax the brain, naturally lowering your stress levels.  So, before a busy day at work, make yourself a bowl of oatmeal to help combat any stressful situations you may face throughout the day.

2. Want to relieve stress during your busy day at work, have a turkey sandwich for lunch.

Turkey is packed with vitamin B, an important vitamin used to help process essential chemicals needed to relax.  In other words, you could have all the dopamine and serotonin your body could desire, but without vitamins B in your diet you’re body is unable to process it.  Your folate levels (a type of vitamin B) are compromised when the body is stressed and rapidly depleted.  Not only will turkey fill your body with its daily recommend amount of folate, it will also provide your body with a high dosage of serotonin. Our schedules can be very demanding of our time, but luckily eating a turkey sandwich only takes a couple minutes, so next time you’re looking to distress in a timely manner, just make your way over to a local deli or sandwich shop.

3. Chamomile tea is full of flavonoid, a natural chemical affects the same receptors in the brain as the drug Valium, which is used to relax the body.

Chamomile tea can be found in almost any grocery store and is a great way to wind down a stressful day. You can also make your own chamomile tea buy purchasing the chamomile herb and boiling the dried flowering heads, these herbs will release a blue oil containing the chemical flavonoids.  The homemade tea and packaged tea will both cause the body to relax in the same way, it’s only a matter of preference between the processed and homemade tea.   The next time you’re unable to unwind at the end of the day, put some Chamomile tea on the stove while you shower, then sip your way to relaxation, right before you call it a day.

When you ingest the right foods, you can naturally create chemicals within your body that will cause your brain to relax. So next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up these three key components, to help diffuse your stress levels.
