Fan bases have been around forever— I’m sure Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe had their devotees in their day, and people have been following the comings and goings of their favorite celebrities since the Vaudeville days.

However, with the addition of new media like social networks, blogs and tabloids, fan bases have been able to take it to a whole new level. Some of the craziest fan bases around are devoted to TV shows, with such strong commitment to their shows that they have taken it to extreme new heights. Here are the top 10 most intense TV fan bases out there right now.

10. “Veronica Mars”

Marshmallows are one of the most dedicated fan bases out there— they were able to bring back this teen sleuth drama after years off the air via an inspired Kickstarter campaign that reached its full funding of $2 million in less than 24 hours and went on to surpass that goal by millions more dollars. The movie was also successful, and wrapped up many of the loose ends that fans had been concerned about for years.

9. Stephen Colbert

Colbert’s trademark wit and charm make his exaggerated persona a huge draw for viewers. His loyal Colbert Nation followers have helped him do all sorts of crazy things, including creating a Super PAC, getting a treadmill named after him on the International Space Station and even educating viewers about campaign finance better than most cable news.

8. “Chuck”

“Chuck” fans are so dedicated that, to save the show from cancellation, they planned a nationwide campaign involving thousands of Subway sandwiches and a whole lot of hope. Even though “Chuck” was virtually always on the verge of being cancelled, the show’s fans were always there with a scheme to bring it back, and with some impressive organization, they were able to succeed in keeping the perpetual bubble show alive for five great seasons.

7. “Arrested Development”

This wacky show’s fans are so dedicated that they were able to convince Netflix to revive the show even after years off the air. The show’s inside jokes and long running gags are constantly rewarding hardcore fans for sticking with the clever series, and they ensure that fans will stick with it, through thick, thin and that rough patch in the beginning of season 4.

6. “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”

Hardcore fans of this animated children’s series, or Bronies, as they call themselves, have moved into creepier territory over the years, as the fan base has mostly turned into a group of older men in their 40’s. Still, these fans are as dedicated as any, and they will stop at nothing to defend their beloved show.

5. “Whedonverse”

Whedonites are fans of any of Joss Whedon’s many fabulous shows: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog” and the new ABC superhero drama “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Whedon’s snappy dialogue and clever characters have brought fans together for all of the shows, with devoted show lovers doing crazy things like getting tattoos of their favorite quotes and characters and attending conventions en masse.

4. “Sherlock”

Sherlockians are some of the most dedicated fans around, especially for a show that only airs a few episodes each season. Star Benedict Cumberbatch also has his own crazy fan club, which can be shown through the many Tumblrs and other blogs that are dedicated to him and his cheekbones.

3. “Supernatural”

“Supernatural’s” fans have been known to be as crazy as some of the show’s plotlines, with thousands of fans showing up to every convention and entire Tumblr pages dedicated to each of the show’s stars (and the bromances between them). Series star Misha Collins, who plays Castiel on the show, also has his own set of loyal followers, with his fans engaging in a number of random acts of kindness and other adventures across the world.

2. “Lost”

Losties are a dedicated bunch, who have spent years trying to decipher a series that may not be possible to figure out. Fans have done all sorts of crazy things, including chronologically ordering the entire series (with flashbacks, fast forwards and sideways world included) and creating numerous blog posts trying to explain the crazy events of the series.

1. “Game of Thrones”

“Game of Thrones” fans are so numerous and so committed that just about everyone has a friend (or two or five) who has gotten immersed in the world of Westeros. Fans of the books are eager to see how the series will handle filming their favorite moments, while fans of the series who remain unspoiled by the books have an almost crazy obsession with keeping themselves free from any knowledge of future plot points at all. Either way, whether fans are spoiled or unspoiled, it is clear that HBO’s supernatural drama is going to be sticking around for a while.
