So it’s the end of the week and you’re excited to go out with your friends and celebrate all of the hard work you’ve accomplished. But as you peek into your closet, you can’t help but think about the straps and the blisters and the tight fabric.

You think about how uncomfortable it can be to have to readjust your top every five seconds and wonder how many more times you can stumble around in your heels before actually breaking an ankle. And why do dangly earrings start to feel like they are made out of steel? And if you wear that high-waist belt, will you start to feel like you are slowly getting squeezed in half?

Dressing up to go out can be a literal pain. But there are ways to dress so you can enjoy your night, but still look great. Don’t let what you wear distract you from the moments you should be sharing with your friends.

Shoes: Heels can be fun and they make your legs look awesome. But they come with all kinds of consequences like blisters, having to really pay attention to how you walk, and overall, wanting to cut your feet off after only an hour of wearing them. Your foot is not designed to wear high heels, no matter how incredible they look.

Luckily, heels aren’t a requirement for going out at night. There are plenty of flatter shoes that can still complete any outfit. When it’s warm, strappy sandals or flats can be worn. In colder weather, all kinds of stylish boot styles are a good choice.

However, if you still want to walk a few inches taller, there are shoe options with a lift that won’t completely kill your feet. Wedges are good replacements for regular heels because they offer more support for your arches and often have a platform, which makes the raise between your toes and heel shallower. Most likely, wedges will be more comfortable than heels and can be much easier to walk in as well. Heels that have chunkier heels (not just a skinny stiletto) are becoming more popular and will also help with walking ability and comfort.

Jewelry: Jewelry is a fun way to change up your outfit and add a creative edge, it can also get annoying to wear. While getting dressed, try not to wear any jewelry that usually gives you problems (like a bracelet that always slips off, a necklace that pokes you, rings that start to irritate your skin).

While you may be able to take this jewelry off and put it in a safe place during the day, when you are out and get sick of it, you may not have a reliable place to put it and are more likely to lose it. This is especially true of earrings that start to weigh you down after a while. Only purchase earrings that are lightweight in the future to avoid having to take them out halfway through the night.

Clothing: Nothing takes away from feeling confident and comfortable like having to constantly readjust your outfit or worry if something is showing that shouldn’t be. To avoid having to fret about your clothes all night, try to wear clothes that you have worn before and that you know you are comfortable in. Sometimes you don’t realize how itchy or stiff clothing is until you’ve worn it around for a little while.

It can also be an unpleasant surprise when your shirt or belt doesn’t cooperate well with the food belly you get after dinner. Tight clothes can look flattering, but be a complete pain. Only wear skin-tight if you are prepared to deal with all of its constrictions. In addition, a lot of clothes may reveal more than you personally want. If this sounds like a problem you have, try wearing garments like bandeaus or spandex shorts under your outfit as a back up.

Weather: One of the easiest ways to stay comfortable when going out is to actually dress for the weather. Even though it may be hot at the restaurant/bar/party you are going to, you won’t be happy on the way there and the way back if you are wearing a tank top and it’s cold enough to build a snowman. Even though it can be annoying to grab a jacket on the way out the door, it will be worth it. The same goes for even gloomier weather like rain and snow. You can always take off your gear in the car or store it on a hook at the outing if you don’t want to keep track of it all night.

Don’t let your clothes and accessories take control of the night. Dressing comfortably to go out can be easy. While you can obviously dress however you would like and look good to feel good, remember that what you wear won’t be as memorable as the fun times that you get to have … unless all you remember is being uncomfortable or in pain all night.
