Johnny Depp, Career Flop?
Remember the 90′s when Johnny Depp was the heartthrob of every classic. Those cheekbones were literally to die for. You could even flashback to ten years ago when he graced the screen again with his rugged but memorable and iconic portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s classic, Pirates of the Caribbean. Classic.
What happened to the famous Captain Jack Sparrow or even the lovable heartthrob who stole our hearts in the 80′s? Looking back on Depp’s career, he has made some interesting choices which doesn’t seem to attract new viewers or even his usual loyal viewers. In the last five years of Depp’s career his movies have all been flops, big budget production that seem to die in their place, never taking off once they hit the big screens.
Depp made the decision to star in another Bruckheimer film The Lone Ranger in summer 2013. The Lone Ranger seemed promising and was thought to be a huge summer blockbuster; but the critics thought otherwise, tearing it apart in reviews which convinced audiences to skip the feature.
Depp’s most recent blockbuster seemed like a promising Sci-Fi drama, Transcendence and received plenty of advertising promoting the feature. However, the actual movie was another flop, earning less than the original production cost itself. A big movie no-no.
Now don’t get me wrong, Depp is known for picking the most absurd and usually strangest roles to create new characters. Remember his memorable performance as the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland? No one else could have done the part justice. Even his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow brought the Pirates series a comedic relief side that made the movie wholesome. However, his recent acting choices have not caused positive audience viewing responses.
It might be time for a face-lift for his career or maybe audiences are done and want to see new actors fill in his old role. Regardless, Johnny Depp will always hold a special place in our hearts and we salute you.
