Jimmy Fallon: Best Late Night Addition

By Laura Devine on April 16, 2014

Viral videos, famous stars, and interaction with the fans. These are just some of the reasons Jimmy Fallon has soared and ranked up air time as the new addition and host to the Tonight Show! on NBC.

Fallon has been a popular comedic genius for quite some time now after earning his start like most popular comedians on the infamous Saturday Night Live (SNL!). Perhaps this is where Fallon learned the key facets to entertaining an audience of a hundred thousand and keeping them engaged while some late night hosts are at a stand still.

While other Late Night shows such as Conan!, Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman have fallen, Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’s ratings continue to soar. Many people have even speculated that Fallon’s high ratings have ultimately caused David Letterman’s retirement, though of course this is not proven. Letterman has reigned on the Late Show for a lengthy period of 21 years and will soon be replaced by Stephen Colbert from the Colbert Report.

Colbert isn’t the only one replacing TV hosts. Fallon’s rise ultimately started by replacing TV mogul Jay Leno. Maybe its just time for the old guys to step aside so that the younger hosts can make their debut, connecting better with audiences.

Regardless of the reason, Fallon shows no signs of stopping soon. After signing onto the Tonight Show and moving the location from historic Los Angeles to New York City, his viewership soars to 4.23 million on average, leaving Kimmel and Letterman in the dust with 2.83 and 2.70 million respectively.

What is the cause of the sudden flock to Fallon? Perhaps its Fallon’s iconic skits and games that he plays with celebrity guest stars. Gone are the days of traditional question and answer sessions that used to keep audiences entertained. Now audiences are interested in whats going viral and what crazy skits and portrayals that they can tweet about or post on social media.

Fallon’s skits with famous celebrities have been his most popular facet of the show and have included several videos and clips go viral across YouTube Channels and BuzzFeed articles.

Some of Fallon’s most popular moments are Idina Menzel and The Root’s performance of popular song “Let it Go” as well as Billy Joel and Jimmy Fallon’s duet on “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Both skits went viral on the internet hours after initially viewed.

So is Jimmy Fallon wiping away all other Late Night competition? Colbert’s transition to the Late Show in place of David Letterman is a new chance to create higher ratings. But as of now, Fallon’s The Tonight Show sits among the top.
