You don’t need to drink coffee if you want an energy boost. Even if you need to stay up late to study or get work done, there are much better ways to increase your alertness while avoiding the jitteriness that comes with drinking coffee. Here are 10 healthier ways to get your energy boost.

1.     Have a piece of gum. The minty flavor in gum or mints can stimulate your body’s nervous system, which helps to increase alertness. Studies have shown that peppermint gum can help boost your performance in a number of ways –increased motivation, confidence, energy and alertness.

2.     Drink cold water.  Drinking cold water can really wake you up when you’re not feeling alert, especially if you’re in class. Being dehydrated can also make you feel lethargic, so make sure to carry a bottle of ice-cold water.

3.    Do 20 jumping jacks. You don’t need to do a full-on workout to get the benefits of exercise. Do at least 20 jumping jacks and you’ll instantly feel more energized.

4.    Take a power nap. Sometimes the only way to get over a slump is to take a nap. Studies show that you can take a 10-20 minute nap without throwing off your night’s sleep.

5.    Talk to a friend. The next time you’re feeling tired, try talking to a friend. Chatting can actually help make you feel more alert. And if your friends are too busy to talk, calling works too.

6.    Take a walk. Heading outdoors and taking a walk for just 20 min. is enough to make you feel more alive, distress your mind and boost your mood and energy.

7.    Think fast. Studies prove that when you make you force your brain to think or read at a faster pace you feel more energized.

8.    Turn on the lights. If you are trying to get work done in a dimly lit room you are bound to feel sleepy, so turn on the lights if you want to stay awake and alert.

9.    Sit up straight. Slouching over your shoulder can cause fatigue throughout the day. Try to sit up straight as soon as you find yourself slouching. Imagine a string under your chin not letting you slouch and keeping your posture straight.

10. Spray a citrus-y scent. Sniffing certain scents, like citrus, is proven to stimulate the body’s senses and increase feelings of alertness. If you don’t like citrus scents you can spray any other scent as long as you think it makes you feel more alert.
