Pinterest-inspired Mason jar DIYs

By Mel DeCandia on March 7, 2014

If you’ve been on Pinterest or stepped into an Anthropologie store lately, you’ll already know that Mason jars are among the most popular “boho-chic” items to decorate with. Mason jars are both inexpensive and adorable, and can also be used for various purposes—perfect for dorm living! Read on for three new ideas on how to spice up your living space with these Mason jar DIYs!

1)  Seaglass-painted Pencil Holder

These painted pencil holders will make for easy organization while also adding a unique pop of color to your desktop! Merely mix a generous amount of Elmer’s glue with a few drops of food coloring in the color of your choice. Paint the mixture on the outside of the jar and leave the jar upside down to try—you’ll be left with this amazing frosted, metallic look!

2)  Pin cushion-topped Sewing Kit

Without a tailor (or Mom) to help you with the wear and tear your clothes might face at college, you’ll find a sewing kit to be a necessary dorm accessory- so why not make it as cute as you can?

Choosing a fabric of your choice, cut a circular piece that is approximately 1 inch wider than the Mason jar’s inside lid all the way around. Place the lid upside down and, using a hot glue gun, attach the edges of the fabric to the edge of the lid ¾ of the way around, bunching as you go.  Through the opening you are left with, stuff batting inside until the lid is poufy and even—glue the remainder of the fabric down and place the outer lid back over it, creating your pin cushion lid!

You can now fill the empty jar with various other sewing supplies: mini scissors, zippers, pins, embroidery thread and string. Screw the decorative lid back onto the Mason jar and your nifty new sewing kit is done!

3)  Flame-free Indoor Lanterns

Nearly every girl’s dorm room is donned with Christmas lights… Stand out with these super cute Mason jar lanterns that are flame-free and dorm safe! Mix ¼ cup of Mod Podge and 5-7 drops of food coloring, again in the color of your choice.  After painting, let sit for 1-2 minutes, then stipple the jar with a wad of paper towel to achieve a stained glass-like effect! After drying completely, merely place an upside down solar light on top (you can buy these relatively cheap on Amazon, made specifically to fit the top of Mason jars) in place of the jar’s lid. Voila—warm and inviting new lighting for your living space!
