5 Must-See Movies of March 2014

By Elana Goodwin on February 25, 2014

March is expected to be a successful month at the box office with a number of highly anticipated movies hitting theaters. Here are the top five must-see movies coming out in March:

1. On March 14, the movie Veronica Mars is set to open in select theaters across the country. Veronica Mars used to be a TV show on UPN before switching to The CW and was cancelled after being on air for three seasons, from 2004-2007. The show starred Kristen Bell as the title character, a high school girl who works at her father’s private investigations firm and is herself a teenage private eye.  The movie will pick up several years after the last season in which Veronica was a college freshman and will also star Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra, and Enrico Colantoni. The idea for a movie was talked about and pitched several times since the series ended but ultimately turned down. It was only when star Kristen Bell and creator Rob Thomas turned to public funding platform Kickstarter to raise the money for the movie that the idea became reality as Veronica Mars fans quickly helped the campaign reach its $2 million goal and then some. The movie will reunite the majority of the cast and includes cameos from several characters that guest-starred on the show as well.

2. The Muppets Most Wanted opens on March 21 and stars Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, and Ty Burrell. A whole slew of other Hollywood bigwigs are also listed as cast members of the project, including Lady Gaga, Zach Galifianakis, Ray Liotta, Stanley Tucci, and more. The movie is the sequel to the highly successful 2011 movie The Muppets, which starred Jason Segel (who also co-wrote the movie), Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and Rashida Jones. The Muppets Most Wanted will find the Muppets gang in Europe on a global tour, where they become entangled in a jewelry heist pulled by a Kermit doppelganger and his evil sidekick.

3. A movie that’s sure to draw a big audience is the sci-fi adventure Divergent, the movie adaptation of the first book in the bestselling Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. The movie stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet and is set in a dystopian futuristic Chicago, where people are divided into five groups based on their personality traits; those who do not fall specifically into one category are “Divergent” and considered a threat to the status quo in the seemingly perfect society. The movie’s sequel Insurgent, based on the second book of the same name in the series, has been confirmed and is already slated to come out in 2015.

4. The adventure/drama Noah starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, and Anthony Hopkins is set to hit theaters on March 28 and is based on the infamous story in the Bible about Noah’s Ark. The movie was directed and co-written by Darren Aronofsky, who also directed the 2010 Oscar-nominated movie Black Swan.

5. Also coming out on March 28 is the crime drama Sabotage, which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, and Joe Manganiello. Loosely based on the Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None, the movie is about a DEA task force who are murdered one by one after they make a drug bust in a cartel’s safe house.
