Tips to Stay Motivated and Accomplish Your Goals

By Abigail Reyes on February 20, 2014

Personal motivation is the key to maintaining pretty much every aspect of life. To successfully accomplish one goal after another you have to stay motivated. If we weren’t motivated we would probably spend our time neglecting all of our goals and doing things that lead us nowhere.

We all know how hard it can be to stay motivated to accomplish our goals when we have other things going on that are occupying our thoughts. Life happens to the best of us — accidents, depression, personal and relationship issues — and even the most determined people can lose their sights sometimes.

You might be doing something that you love or enjoy, but when life gets in the way that sometimes that is not enough to keep you going. Inspiration, passion, and motivation can be difficult to hold on to when you’re going through challenging times. You can’t buy motivation. There is no magic pill that can give you motivation. But what you can do is learn how to tap into your inner-self to find the motivation that you need to accomplish anything

Exactly how do people manage to stay motivated through the tough times? Keep reading for some great tips to get yourself motivated and get back on track to accomplish your goals.

1. Achieve in increments. It can be easy to burn out and loose your sights when you just focus on a big goal that you might accomplish someday sometime in the future. It’s great to look at the big picture, but you haves to take it step by step. The solution is to give yourself some way to measure and record every step that you take forward. You can do this by getting a notebook, journal or calendar to write these things down. This way you can see yourself moving forward day by day and learn to appreciate the small accomplishments, motivating you to keep going.

2. Surround yourself with whatever inspires you. For some of us this could be music, books, podcasts, magazines, blogs, etc. Whatever it is that motivates you, surround yourself with it daily and let it become a part of your life. This way, you will be less likely to run out of motivation when you most need it.

3. Be realistic. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big and being ambitious. However, if you find yourself constantly feeling frustrated or lacking progress, you might need to take a step back and reexamine your goals. Write down your goals, and list at least ten specific, detailed steps that will allow you to achieve it. If you can’t come up with these steps, then you should probably redefine your goals.

4. Get excited. One of the best ways to get over a motivational slump is to get excited about your goal. You can build your excitement by reading success stories and getting inspired by others. Visualize yourself being successful, and view the benefits of your goal in your head. Then carry that excited energy forward and keep going.

5. Make it fun. Attitude is everything, especially when it comes to motivation. Depending on how you look at it, you can have fun doing just about anything. When you actually look for ways to make something fun, you will find them.

6. Remind yourself that this won’t go on forever. If you’re a college student and are feeling overwhelmed by your studies, remind yourself that this too shall pass. After finals, you will be done with your class, so let that motivate you to study the subject one more time, and then keep moving forward.
