World's Little Moments

By Nicole Hillstead on April 27, 2012

He stood there leaning against the cross he held for all passer-by to see. His wiry beard, dark face, and dirt encrusted knuckles giving the appearance that he had not yet showered that week. His clothing hung from his frail frame in a well worn manner. The cross he clung to bore the words “God Saves” along with numerous signatures of the people I can only imagine agree with that statement and the religion he was advertising for. At first glance he was certainly no Santa Clause you wanted to run up to and jump on his lap, so I was surprised by the actions I witnessed next.

One of the cars driving through the intersection pulled up to the curb where this man stood, rolled down his window, and handed the man a water bottle.

“It’s hot out there man, better stay hydrated” was all the driver said before pulling away and continuing to his destination.

Knowing that about 90% of the population in Utah is LDS my guess is that the man in the car had no interest in learning about this other religion, he didn’t want to be converted, he didn’t have any relations with the old man and his sign, yet he went out of his way to make a kind gesture.

The way this driver reached out to someone he didn’t even know made me want to do the same. He not only lifted the spirits of the old man at the corner that was in need of water; he lifted my spirits as well.

The driver’s kindness was observed by more than just me; there were a handful of other college students waiting at that same light at the time this driver handed over the water bottle, and I’m sure these people were touched by the amiable act as well.

Amongst all the violent video games, unspeakable kidnappings, rapes, wars, and other calamities in today’s world it is nice to see the world’s little wonders, and perhaps even create a chain reaction spreading kindness to others we pass.

I challenge you to look for someone in your busy schedule today that could use a smile, hello, a meal, or anything else and act upon your instincts to help. Be one of the world’s little wonders and touch someone’s heart for the better.
