Evelyn, Evelyn - A Story of a Musical Sisterhood

By Rosa Cho on May 22, 2012

To ask which one is “Eve” or “Lyn” would be like asking which one is the bread or butter of this unusual sisterhood.

In a rare interview that only has occurred live onstage, Evelyn, Evelyn answered selected questions with shy, honest answers, each sister politely letting the other finish each other’s sentences. The two sisters are so close to each other that they might as well be sewn to the hip.

You see, Evelyn, Evelyn aren’t like any other traveling singing duos for they are sisters who, connected at the side, share two lungs, three legs, two hearts, and a single liver. They are a pair who is always connected and, through thick and thin, circuses and dreadful orphanages alike have remained close to each other lovingly and supporting.

Too good to be true?

The minds behind the magic are Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley, both are amazingly talented songwriters and singers who have conceived Evelyn, Evelyn and, though are officially labeled as “producers” are none other than the twins themselves.

Amanda Palmer was inspired by a single thought during her own tours and, with the help of her own producer, decided to make Evelyn, Evelyn a reality. However, it was the support of a fellow songwriter Jason Webley, who aided in bringing story of the conjoined twin duo to life. Evelyn, Evelyn’s lives are chronicled in a graphic novel which depicts their birth, orphaning, various homes, their life as a part of a traveling circus, and ultimately their rise to stardom through internet. A merging of the fantastical and the modern, Evelyn, Evelyn stand as a testament to the power of love in the face of the bleak and hopeless. Well, while Evelyn, Evelyn’s story could be interpreted that way, it is still universally known that their songs, from the upbeat “Elephant, Elephant” to the darker toned “Sandy Fishnets” and “Evelyn, Evelyn”, are touching and have moved many an audience through the country.

Now, though their tours become rarer and fewer, you can always listen to their hauntingly, whimsically, fascinating songs that certainly leave you with the impression that the impossible might as well be possible.
