Finding Ways to Write in College
We all know that time management is one of the skills that escapes one’s mind easily in college. If you’re a writer, you know that going through writing withdrawals is severely damaging to the soul. So here are some tips to awaken that monstrously incredible writer within you.
Clear your mind. This can be done in many ways. Take deep breaths and focus on a blank space in your mind and view it as a plain canvas. View it as your personal canvas to cover with your musings.
Find a place to write. It can be anywhere: underneath your raised bed surrounded by Christmas lights and pillows, in a cozy corner of your school’s library or under an oak on a warm spring day. Your surroundings are crucial to the writing experience.
Keep yourself inspired. Read what you love, go online and look at your favorite artists’ paintings or sketches or listen to your favorite music. Inspiration is key to creating something worthwhile.
Create a playlist of music that you can listen to while writing. Spotify and Pandora are the perfect outlets for this. Cater the playlist to your own inspirations. My playlist consists of wordless, quieter music that keeps me focused, but also induces creativity within my brain as I listen to it.
Talk to others about your writing. Spread the word that you are about to write something magnificent. It will increase your desire to follow through with those words and spring them into action.
Most importantly, make time to write. Even if it is for thirty minutes on a cramped day, make time for your writing. Equate your writing to your nutrition, in a healthy way of course. You cannot go a day without eating, right? View your writing as the same.
