Underrated Locations on Campus That You May Not Know Exist

By Michelle Collins on May 1, 2012

I’m constantly looking for a new places on campus to crank out study guides, grab lunch with a friend, or just somewhere with great people watching potential. After asking around, these are some of the lesser known locations at FSU that I think are useful and should be utilized by students more often.

Krentzman Lounge- If you’re anything like me, you loathe battling the masses at Strozier for a coveted seat next to an outlet or during finals week, a seat at all. The Krentzman Lounge is on the 2nd floor of the Oglesby Union above Chili’s. Every time I’ve visited this lounge it has had plenty of open seating and there was no need to stare down a fellow student with the hope that they would stop hogging an outlet. This lounge has comfortable booth seating, group tables, and even a large couch in front a flat screen television. This location is certainly underrated, wether you want a quiet nook to nap in between classes, a location to meet up for a group project, or a place to take advantage of free cable TV.

Johnston Ground floor

Johnston Ground Floor- This is the ground floor of the newly renovated William Johnston building. I ventured into here on accident one day while roaming campus and it turned out to be a worth while mistake. It’s bright and modern looking, with tons of bar stool seating, lounge chairs, and individual study rooms. My favorite part of Johnston Ground is the Digital Studio, a  place that isn’t utilized by students nearly enough. It is a Mac and PC computer lab with pretty much every computer program available, from Photoshop to MovieMaker. They also always have tutors on site to help you learn the programs or to give advice for a project you’re working on. Johnston Ground also is home to the ACE Learning Studio and the Reading and Writing Center.

Krishna Lunch- This lunch serves vegetarian and vegan meals on campus at the Center for Global Engagement. For only $5 you get an entree, salad, rice, dessert, and a drink. When I was first told about this deal I thought the person must have been mistaken because it sounded far too good to be true. It turns out the cafe really does exist and is apparently just an FSU best kept secret. This is a great lunch to try out one afternoon if you find yourself growing sick of your usual ‘Everything bagel, heavy on the cream cheese’ from Einstein’s or if you’re interested in going meatless for a day! Krishna Lunch is served Monday-Friday from 11:30am-2:00pm.

William’s Courtyard- The William’s building is my favorite building on campus, but I’m an English major so I may be a bit biased. This beautiful courtyard with shade covered benches and tables is located in the center of the building. It’s quiet, cozy, and the perfect place to get lost in thought or catch up on some reading, weather permitting of course. If you’re lucky, you may even catch an acoustic guitar performance or a poetry reading by fellow students.

King Life Sciences building

Free Printing in the King Building- I didn’t realize until I moved out that printer ink can be ridiculously pricey but having to buy it can be easily avoided. If your apartment complex doesn’t offer free printing or your roommate finally caught on to you using their printer when they weren’t home, then this location may be a saving grace for you. The King Life Sciences building has two computer labs that offers free printing to students, all you need to do is provide your own paper. You’re already paying for this luxury in your tuition so you might as well take advantage of it. Your wallet (and your roommate) will thank you.
