Science is not a democracy

By Reid Booker on April 26, 2012

Texas and California make up a huge chunk of the grade school textbook market.  The education boards in these states, because they make up such a large proportion of the market, set the standards for a lot of the textbook publishers.  These standards are then put into the textbooks which are also purchased by other states and school districts across the country.

Many people have issues with current versions of textbooks, and want to amend history and science books. Proposed changes include teaching creationism, excluding evolution, excluding facts about Thomas Jefferson, changing views on slavery, and many other radical ideas that are being debated everyday.  It is mostly radical conservatives who basically wish to rebel against the “Liberal experts” and teach whatever delusional dribble they think is right to children all across America.

The problem with teaching creationism, or doing any of these other things above, is that they are wrong.  Science and history are not things to be debated (for the most part).  You cannot take universally accepted facts, and then just deny them and demand children be taught lies.  Reality is reality, you don’t get to pick and choose which parts are real.

Creationism is not science.  Science is truth, it is what we use to objectively and definitively determine what is real.  Evolution is real.  It has been observed, it has decades and decades of evidence and research behind it, it is universally accepted as the origin of life by virtually every scientist and institution.  This is why it is taught in schools, it is science.  Creationism is a fairy tale, there is no evidence, no basis in reality, nothing.  You can’t just decide to put creationism in science classes because you want to.  You don’t get to pick and choose what is and isn’t science.  Science is not up for debate, it is not a thing to be voted on, it isn’t something you get to choose to believe in, science just is.

Public education is already pretty weak, why are people trying to make it worse by teaching children insane propaganda? I am literally disgusted by these actions.  No adult has the right to take away a child’s  proper education just because that adult is in denial of reality and too stubborn to let go of whatever fantasy they believe is real.  I don’t see how these people are any different from nut jobs that deny the moon landing, 9/11, or the holocaust.
