Why Florida State is the BCS No.1

Jameis Winston and Florida State are the No. 3-ranked team in the AP and BCS standings. But the Seminoles are the best team in the nation right now.

Alabama has widely been considered the best team in the nation for nearly three years. After winning back-to-back BCS National Championships, and three in the last four seasons, Alabama once again finds themselves atop the BCS rankings.

However, the No.1 ranking only makes them the best team in polls and computers. The best team in the nation on the field right now? Well, that title belongs to the Seminoles of Florida State.

In the latest Associated Press and BCS standings, Florida State is rank No. 3 behind Oregon and Alabama, respectively. However, the Seminoles are playing the best football of any team at the current point in the season.

Florida State is the only top-three team in action this week, facing a tough test as the host the No. 7 team in the country, Miami Hurricanes. Alabama and Oregon both have bye weeks, but return with tough test in Week 11.

With the national spotlight focused on them during a primetime matchup, Florida State can make a statement. Dominating a talented Hurricanes team on Saturday night will alert the nation that they are far better than there number three ranking indicates.

If they can do that, the Seminoles will prove why they are in fact the best team in the nation. They not only rise to the level of their competition, they have downright dominated them thus far.

During a Week 5 matchup against the then-ranked Maryland Terrapins, Florida State treated them like a scout team. The Seminoles were virtually unstoppable, destroying the Terrapins 63 to zero. And during the teams much anticipated matchup against a then-ranked No. 3 Clemson team two weeks later, Florida State’s performance was even more telling. Dominating the Tigers 51-14 in Death Valley was arguably the most impressive performance from any team this season.

And for that reason, Florida State is the best team in the nation. Obviously Alabama and Oregon have been impressive. AJ McCarron and Marcus Mariota have been playing lights-out football for their teams. But the way Jameis Winston has been playing is downright unfair. The redshirt freshman has been the best player every time he steps onto the field. Winston has arguably the best set of skill position players surrounding him, and their defense has shutdown potent offenses consistently.

All hell will break loose if, and when, these three teams finish the season unbeaten. And if all three teams continue to play they way they have been, there is no question that Florida State is the best team in the nation.

I just hope they get the chance to prove it.
