A Piece On: Big Sur
If you’re a student at UCSC and haven’t gone to visit Big Sur, you really need to get your priorities in line. It is a necessity. It’s vital to your health, heart and soul. You know how freshman are always asking for things to do during their time at UCSC or when seniors give advice, bucket list type stuff….this is my one golden piece of advice. Big Sur is beyond words. The drive to Big Sur from Santa Cruz is beyond words. Going down the coast is breathtaking. No, I am not exaggerating and I’m not overly excited. This is a must in a person’s lifetime. Many famous people from Hemingway to Clint Eastwood have gone to Big Sur and been inspired by its beauty. People have written books, poems and stories about it. There are songs about it. It’s really a mythical place. This article right now is flowing like water because of how inspirational Big Sur has been for me. Lately, it has been difficult for me to come up with ideas for these articles but here I am writing away- already almost two hundred words in- and it was a piece of cake. Why? You guessed it. Big Sur. Big Sur. Big Sur. Big Sur. I can’t over emphasise its magnificence and yet I can’t really describe its beauty but I can try. The power, the beauty, the nature, the trees, the ocean and it’s different shades and hues of blues as they touch the big blue sky. The mountains, the rocks, the birds, the grass, it’s beyond anything. When you’re there it feels like a dream. As I sit here writing this article and I think about it, it feels like a dream. We are so lucky that our school actually offers rental gear: backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, mini stoves etc. that you can borrow for a couple days for very cheap and go out there. Here’s a link to check it out: http://www.ucscrecreation.com/index.html. You can go with your own group of friends or go with UCSC. Our school also offers trips out there for relatively cheap as well. If you can afford it, trust me, it is well worth it. Go. Just today I stumbled upon a writer/scientist who writes about the marvelous effects that the ocean and water has on us as human beings and it completely makes sense to me. Especially after stopping on the coast and just staring at the glory that is the pacific ocean. Check it out: http://www.wallacejnichols.org/index.php. It’s very calming, I felt an extreme sense of serenity (oxymoron?) and peace as I watched how the water ebbed and flowed. I felt and feel now rejuvenated and ready to tackle school and life.
