How to get a magazine internship
I love magazines. I follow them several on Twitter, subscribe to a few and Insta-stalk two EICs. It would seem appropriate that I look for magazine internships. Honestly, I just didn’t know where to start.
One of my fellow journalism students pointed me to this website called Ed2010.com, and from there everything changed. Ed not only has an internship listings page, but also offers classes and a bunch of resources. There’s even a campus organization—maybe your school has a chapter! (Maryland does not, FYI).
Using Ed as a resource, I applied to Cosmopolitan’s editorial internship position and was a finalist. I was sent an edit test, which completely overwhelmed me. I didn’t know what a hed or a dek was. Ed’s glossary really did help, even though I wasn’t chosen for that internship (I did receive a different one though!).
Although most of the internship listings are from New York, there are a bunch that can be done remotely. I’ve also seen internship listings for Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc. The internship jobs are totally varied, too. You can find everything from fashion, editorial, marketing, art or photo internships.
The site is really a gold mine for any interested magazine journalists. Chandra Turner, the current executive editor at PARENTS magazine, created Ed2010 in 1998. According to the site, “She and a friend decided to meet up with other magazine whippersnappers and swap job secrets and advice,” and it caught on.
You can follow Ed on Twitter for updates on what might become your dream internship!
