6 Decorative Tips For College Students Living in Dorms

By Uloop Guest Writer on July 11, 2013

If you’re getting ready to head out to college, you’ve probably started thinking about how you’re going to decorate your dorm. There are a lot of options, and it’s important to make sure that your dorm reflects your personality. However, with these  6 decorative tips, you should be able to make the most of your dorm.

1. Get Good Bedding

Inexpensive bedding is tempting, of course, because it doesn’t cost a lot of money. However, the cheaper the bedding, the faster it’s going to wear out and the more likely it is to keep you tossing and turning all night before the big exam. If you want to know the best place to spend a good amount of your decorating budget, having a quality comforter and comfortable sheets is one of the best things you can do for your dorm room’s quality of life.

2. Lamps for Ambiance and Lighting

Make sure to light your dorm room well. With proper lighting you’ll feel great, you’ll be able to study better, and the room will look amazing. Get a variety of lamps to help light your dorm room. Do you prefer floor lamps or table lamps? Mix and match these styles to light the room and pull it all together.

3. Tons of Storage Options

You need to have a lot of great storage options when you’re in a dorm. You’re probably not going to have a lot of space for all of your stuff. Because of this, you need to be creative with your storage. Each piece in your dorm should have more than one purpose. If you have a footstool, for example, it should be one doubles as storage space. This will give you more options of where to keep you things.

4. Posters, Pictures, and Decals

As any Freshman will soon soon realize, bare white walls get boring. Instead of dealing with boring walls, it’s a simple task to make them look great. Put up a variety of posters, pictures, and wall decals. Since all of these are removable (particularly if you use non-abrasive poster putty), they can be used in most college dorms, however, it’s still a good idea to check with your dorm’s rules.

5. Blinds Keep You Sane

Whether you stayed up late studying or partying, having the right blinds over your window can help keep the sun out of your eyes. If you’re a gamer, they’re also an ideal way to enhance your gaming experience during the day. With creative window blinds in Houston, for example, there are many different blind options to fit the rest of the coloring in your dorm room.

6. Pull a Theme Through

If you’re serious about your dorm decorating, make sure to follow through with a theme. No matter what your theme is, make sure to keep it going through all of your decorating. Are you going with something simple like a color scheme? Or are you decorating with an idea in mind? If you’re sharing a dorm room, it’s a good idea to talk to your dorm mate, and see if they’re interested in decorating the space in a specific way. This will help bring harmony to the dorm room.

Decorating your dorm is probably not the most important thing you’ll do during the year at college. However, it will help you feel more comfortable in your space. Because of this, it is very important that you take the time to decorate the dorm.
