Walking London

By Anne Knighton on February 18, 2013

You start at the great tower, former palace and prison. Its large walls held such illustrious persons as Anne Bolyn, Lady Jane Grey, and the lost princes before their deaths. Walking around the walls, you get a sense of its grandeur and majesty of the British Empire. Finally you come to the Tower Bridge, with its turrets rising above the buildings around it. Walk across it, listening to the Themes and the many different languages of people surrounding you. Follow the Themes, heading down towards Parliament. The river air is crisp and cool, and it almost feels like you’re on an ocean. Go down some side steps and feel the water – it’s cool, like the surrounding air. Come back up and continue down the themes. Soon you come to the Globe Theatre, famous playhouse of Shakespeare himself. Cross what I like to call the “Harry Potter Bridge” (it’s the interesting, curvy, white bridge destroyed by the Death Eaters in HP6) and you come straight to St. Paul’s Cathedral itself with its large dome rising above the city. Sadly though, there is no bird woman asking for tuppance. Cross back across the Harry Potter Bridge and continue down the themes. This is one of the most interesting parts of the city, filled with street performers and market shops to explore. Finally you come to the giant ferris wheel, the eye of London itself. Cross the bridge next to that and you’re at the heart of London politics, Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Not to mention the most famous of London landmarks – Big Ben himself. Walk down one of the streets (sadly I can’t remember which one) and you end up in Trafalger Square with the National gallery and the famous lion statues you can climb onto and ride. Go left out of the square and take another right onto Haymarket and you come to Her Majesty’s Theatre where “Phantom of the Opera” has been playing for years. Follow Haymarket down and you come to my favorite part in all of London – Piccadilly Circus. Piccadilly is basically Times Square, but not as crowded or grand. They even have their own M&M World! Anyways, it’s the main theatre district of London (the West End as they all it) and I love it! Cross the main street and go down Stafford Ave. Some of you might recognize this as the street Hermione transports herself and Harry too after the ruined wedding in HP7. Anyways, walk down the street, seeing all the restaurants and shops (even a Rainforest Café)! You’ll also see many theatres down this street. One’s playing “Chariots of Fire” another is showing a couple of Shakespeare’s choice plays. However, these aren’t the ones you want. Keep walking down the street until you come to Queens theatre. You can’t miss it, as it’s the one with a giant lit up sign of Cosette’s head. Yep, this is where the great musical of our time, “Les Misérables” is showing. Go inside and enjoy the show :D
