Sweet and Sour Strawberry Lemonade Recipe

By Cori Russell on April 1, 2013

It is now officially SPRING! If you’d like to start your own seasonal tradition, or you’d just like to bring some summer splashes to the middle semester then I recommend you try this delicious, sweet and sour strawberry lemonade, made from scratch, by you.

Prep Time:

30 minutes, including clean up

Equipment:

Stove or hotplate

Stove pot

pitcher or bottle

spoon

juicer (unless using already-juiced juice)

knife

cutting board or plate

Food:

3-4 lemons (may substitute lemon juice)

4-5 cups Drinking water

A couple spoonfuls of sugar (normally this results in sour > sweet, so add more if you prefer)

A couple handfuls of Strawberries (Fresh is preferred, frozen will do but they should be thawed in the fridge beforehand)

The Steps:

1. Combine 1-2 cups drinking water and a few spoonfuls of sugar in the stove pot.

2. Heat the pot with the sugar water over high, stirring occasionally with your spoon, while you prepare everything else.

2. Cut & juice the lemons using your knife and juicer.

3. Cut the strawberries into halves, or into quarters, or dice them depending on your mood.

4. Check on that sugar water! Once all of the sugar is dissolved it is done. The longer you let it heat up, the more syrupy it will become. (More sugar + less water = more syrupy) Stir it some, and when it is to your liking remove it from the heat and pour it into your pitcher.

5. Add the lemon juice and cut up strawberries to the pitcher and fill it with the remaining drinking water to your taste preference. Refrigerate your beautiful mixture for at least an hour. If you give it more time to sit, say overnight or a couple days, then the flavors will combine and settle into a delicious dance of sweet and sour.

This is one of my favorite drinks to make because it is easy, cheap, and way healthier than soda. If you’d like to make it even fancier, add sparkling water instead of regular drinking water. You can also add different fruits in addition to or in substitution of strawberries. I have made this with blueberries and it tastes just as good! I’d also recommend mangoes, raspberries, blackberries, and crushed cherries but there are plenty of possibilities.

Now take a sip and…

Enjoy!
