Facing Issues With Neighbors

By Jordyn Austin on February 9, 2017

As a college student, you will more than likely have neighbors no matter where you live. Having neighbors can be a good thing, but sometimes we do not get so lucky. Many people have different living styles and this could ultimately affect whether or not they are good neighbors.

Here are some issues you might face with neighbors.

Issues

Noise

The first and most obvious issue is noise. Noise is a very common complaint people have with their neighbors. Neighbors can be loud in many ways. You could live near someone who likes to play their music very loud. You could also live near someone who likes to throw parties often.

In these situations, you have to deal with noisy people on top of loud music. Sometimes neighbors are inadvertently loud, but other times, they simply do not care. When you live beneath someone in an apartment, it can be very noisy. You can almost hear everything your neighbors are doing, including their footsteps. No one really likes for their neighbors to be loud, but this may be an issue you have to face. Later we’ll discuss how you can solve the issue of loud neighbors.

Pets

Another issue you may have with a neighbor is their pet(s). Although having a pet can be rewarding, they can oftentimes be a lot of work. Pets can be noisy and destructive. If your neighbor’s pet mistakenly gets out it can be destructive to your yard, if you live in a house. Pets like dogs and birds can be very noisy. Since many pets can be a nuisance, this can be annoying or distracting for you. Pets can even pose a threat if they are not properly trained or house broken.

Illegal activity

You could run into a neighbor who does illegal activities like prohibited drugs (i.e. marijuana). With these kinds of neighbors, you could have to deal with the stench and maybe reckless, destructive behavior. Drugs make people do some crazy things and as their neighbor, you could be caught in the middle of it all.

If a neighbor is into illegal activity and drugs this could pose a threat to you and your safety. You never know who is coming in and out of the home. In this case, we’ll also discuss how you handle these kinds of neighbors.

Borrowing

Neighbors can be pesky. This kind of neighbor may always be knocking on your door for a plethora of reasons. They may always need to borrow something or always have questions about something. Although this issue with a neighbor may not be as bad as the others, it can still become annoying if they bother you enough.

Fighting

One last issue you may come across with neighbors is them fighting with each other. This could be a couple or even friends who argue. Sometimes the noise can get very out of hand. People argue and raise their voices and this can cause a raucous. Unfortunately, fighting neighbors can also become violent. You could have to deal with law enforcement becoming involved if it is a domestic violence case.

How to deal

Even though some of the bad neighbor cases were on the extreme side, whatever kind of issues you have with your neighbors, you always need to make sure you’re safe. You should also be concerned about anyone else who may be caught in the cross-fire. If you hear violence, yelling and things being thrown around, it is probably best to call the police. You really never know who you could be helping and it is better to be safe than sorry.

You should also inform the police if you are certain your neighbors are involved in illegal activity and drugs that could put you or others in danger. You never know what is going on in another person’s home, so for their safety and yours, the police would be the best contact. If you are worried about your identity, make sure you just let the police know that you would like to be kept anonymous. This will ensure that your neighbors do not get specifically upset at you for notifying the police.

For some of the lesser issues, communication is always a good place to start. If your neighbors are being too loud, going to their door and respectfully mentioning it more than likely will fix the issue. Neighbors appreciate when someone politely lets them know when they are being too noisy the first time instead of automatically reporting them to the police. People make mistakes and some people do not even realize how loud they are until someone else tells them. It is common courtesy to just let them know they are being too noisy. If it becomes out of hand, it is your right to file a noise complaint with your landlord or property managers.
