Over the course of your college career, it’s fair to assume that you’ll be doing quite a lot of moving between different dorms and apartments. While this can often be a stressful and overwhelming experience, there are ways to make the process go more smoothly.

To do so, here are some tips to help make your move a little better.

1. Declutter Before You Move

The best — and, arguably, easiest — way to improve your moving experience is to simply bring less stuff with you. Take the time to declutter before you move, so you’re not bringing any extraneous items into your new place. There’s bound to be old clothes and knickknacks that you’ve accumulated and no longer want or need, so go through your stuff critically either before you start packing or during your packing process to find items that can be thrown away or donated.

In addition to having less to move, this means that you’ll be starting fresh in your new place without any unnecessary clutter.

2. Start Packing Early

The earlier you start packing, the less chaotic your move will be. If you give yourself enough time, you’ll be able to pack in an organized way without feeling rushed or hassled. In addition, starting early means you can pack a little at a time and won’t be faced with the overwhelming task of packing your entire apartment away in one day.

Start with the items you don’t need every day, such as books or decorations. Then you can leave other items that you do need — such as your bedding — out until closer to your move without having to rush.

3. Stay Organized

It can be tempting when you’re in a rush to move to simply throw all of your stuff into boxes with no rhyme or reason. However, if you spend a little more time packing, it will be significantly easier to unpack when you arrive at your new place. Keep items for the same room together and label the boxes, so you know where everything is. You’ll be grateful when you arrive at your new place starving and know where to find all of your kitchenware.

4. Set Up Your Most Important Spaces First

When you arrive at your new place and begin unpacking, start with the essentials: the kitchen, bathroom, and your bed. Unpacking can be a long process so you may not want to tackle it all at once. If you get these spaces set up first, that means that you can take a break — and even a nap — whenever you need one.

Leave other areas such as your closet for last; you don’t want to be stuck exhausted and hungry with all of your clothes organized but no utensils to eat your food with and no bed to sleep in.

5. Ask Your Friends to Help

Though it can be done, moving all on your own will undoubtedly be far more difficult and stressful than if you have help. See if any of your friends are available for the day, or even for a couple of hours; in addition to making the process go faster and more smoothly, it will be all around more enjoyable if you have some company. Offer to buy dinner in return for a set of helping hands — in the end, it will be well worth it.

6. Keep Track of the Items You’ll Need Right Away

When you move, there will probably be a lot of little, everyday items that you’ll need right away but may not necessarily bring with you. Plan a trip to Target or a local grocery store early on in your move to buy the necessities, such as toilet paper, soap, towels, and lightbulbs. It’s also a good idea to have water and some snacks at the ready for whenever you need to replenish your energy.

You may want to take note of your routine in the days leading up to your move as well to determine if there are any other little items that you’ll want to have right away before you’re completely unpacked — think of stuff like shampoo, tissues, or dish soap. Either pack them in an easy spot to find so you don’t have to dig for them if you decide not to do all of your unpacking right away, or keep a list of items to buy the day of your move.

7. Furniture Rental

Furniture rental is a great service that makes the moving process less stressful; rather than having to purchase furniture and move it yourself, renting means that this will all be taken care of for you. With furniture rental, you can choose a specific furniture package online, which can be specialized for students, schedule a delivery date, and have your furniture delivered right to you. You don’t need to do any of the moving, and many companies have special deals for students. This simplifies the process significantly and means that you won’t have to do all of the heavy-lifting yourself.
