Tonight is New Year’s Eve, meaning if you haven’t started planning your New Year’s party, you better get on it! It can seem like a bit of a challenge to plan for a lot of people to squeeze into your apartment, but with a few of these tips, you’ll be able to throw an epic party and accommodate all of your friends that you want to invite.

Move your furniture:

You are going to have to play a bit of Tetris when moving around your furniture for your party. What needs to be out in the living room, and what can be packed away? You want people to have places to sit, so make sure that your couch is accessible, but still out of the walkway. If you have a beanbag or some floor cushions, have those out as well, and maybe have some of your dining chairs or folding chairs around the couch so more people can squeeze in and talk.

Have your coffee table or folding table out by the chairs so people can eat there, but make sure they are pushed against a wall so they aren’t taking up walking space and making the room look extra crammed.

It’s also a good idea to have your TV accessible and maybe have a New Year’s movie playing, like When Harry Met Sally. This way, even if there is a lull in the conversation, it won’t ever lead to awkward silence. Have the TV at an angle where the seats in the living room can see it without having to really move anything around.

Drink station:

Drinks (both alcoholic and non-) should be kept in a location where people will be able to get to it without much hassle since they are going to be hanging out for a while and will want to keep their cups full. If your kitchen has one of those bar counters, that would be a great option. You can stand on the inside of the kitchen and refill, while your guests can easily walk up and then back to the party. If you don’t have one of those, you can makeshift a drinks table using your coffee table or a folding table. Keep it close to the kitchen in case people need more ice, and also so you’ll have easy access to cleaning materials when someone spills (which you know is going to happen).

Buffet table:

Your dining room table, especially if it folds out, is the best place for you to keep all of the snacks and dinner items. If people are bringing food to your party (which hopefully they are), there will be plenty of room for them to put it next to your items on the kitchen/dining table. Since all the chairs will be out in the living room, it will be painless for your guests to mosey around the table and get a little sample of everything onto their plates.

The table is also a great place to decorate. You can have some streamers hanging above it and some festive napkins adorning it, and maybe even have some cute little New Year’s party hats on it for the guests to wear?

For a mess-free environment, have a plastic tablecloth protecting your table and a similar one on the floor under the table. You can find ones that say Happy New Year, so your guests will think that they are part of the decoration, but in reality, it’s just to help you clean up once everyone leaves you at 3 a.m.

Keep people out of areas you don’t want them in:

If your roommates have graciously allowed you to use the apartment to throw a New Year’s party, make sure you do your part and help keep people out of their bedrooms, as well as your own (unless you want strangers in there …). Ask your roommates to lock their rooms, and for extra measure, put signs on the doors to let guests know, in a nice way, that they shouldn’t go in there. The goal is to make the party so happening in your living room that people won’t even be tempted to venture to other parts of the house. So there isn’t any confusion, make sure to label where the bathroom is and check up on it from time to time so you can make sure it stays clean and useable.

New Year’s gear table:

If you have time to go to the Dollar Store or Party City, it would be fun to have a little table filled with New Year’s gear, like horns, streamers, silly string, and funny glasses and hats, so your guests can get dressed up and are ready for when the clock strikes midnight.

If you have part of an empty wall to spare, you could also makeshift a photo booth so your friends can take pictures as they are all New Yeared up.

Hope you have a wonderful party and a Happy New Year!
