5 Things to Consider When You Accept a Temporary Job in a New Location

By Ian Acosta on December 31, 2016

A new job in a new location, albeit temporary, is both an exciting and intimidating adventure. As preparations are being made, many factors come to mind to make sure the time away from home is both a well-prepared and successful one.

Here are five things to keep in mind when taking a temporary job in a new location.

1. Apartments

First thing’s first is figuring out where to live. Many things need to be considered just for finding an apartment but I will keep it pretty general. Most importantly, make sure the compensation from your temporary job will be enough to cover rent for a new apartment and all that comes with it. By that, I mean rent, utilities, groceries, furniture, amenities, and anything that might be necessary for a new place.

To help with that, do some research before you leave. By utilizing an apartment listings site (like Uloop!), Craigslist, or classifieds in the newspaper, it will help you find the best apartment within your budget and help you make the most of your time away.

2. Location

Also, a factor that is quite important is where you are going to live. Ideally, I try to stay as close to a grocery store as possible simply for convenience’s (get it?) sake. However, you might want to live closer to work, or even closer to a certain restaurant.

Some try and pick out an apartment as close as possible to a fitness center to make staying in shape easier. Everybody has their own preferences. Think about what yours is as you pick out a place to live for your new, temporary relocation.

3. Packing

The classic conundrum of how much is too much to pack? This is unique to everyone’s situation. If you think you are a person who loves to shop and wants a new outfit every week, pack light and go shopping once you settle into your new place.

However, keep in mind your budget! If you are more on the frugal side, pack a couple weeks’ worth of clothes. This way, you don’t overstuff yourself as you move your other belongings into your apartment and keep the timeline of laundry to a modest week to a week and a half. Like I said, for those looking to save money and keep their budget intact, consider packing. This way, it will allow you to keep more money for other necessities, such as food, water and rent.

4. Networking

Connections last forever. A major aspect to keep in mind in terms of networking is thinking beyond your temporary job. For those who this instance applies with relocating for an internship, this time is invaluable. Work hard, be a team player, go above and beyond, and just do a good job.

Not only is this a great time to develop your skills and talents with this temporary job, it is a great chance to leave a lasting impression with your boss and other management-level types. After your time with your job is complete, keep in contact with coworkers and managers via LinkedIn. From there, if the time comes to ask for a reference or letter of recommendation, you have a great pool of choices to choose from.

5. Permanency

The future is unpredictable. Life is full of surprises and jobs are no different. You should also consider the fact that this temporary job in another location could turn into a full-time job and potentially a career. To plan for that, it is much the same as above. Work hard, do more than what is asked, and always be ready to help.

In a time where standing out is becoming a necessity, it is imperative to develop great workplace skills for both temporary jobs and potential permanent ones as well. If this temporary position does turn into a full-time position, the process somewhat begins anew. Thinking about where to live, developing a feasible budget, creating a daily routine, planning travel. It seems overwhelming wouldn’t you say? For now, focus on the temporary position and go from there. However, it would be in your best interest to at least consider the possibility of this part-time role turning full-time.

Getting the chance to relocate for a job, even if it is only for a temporary period of time, is a very exciting move that not everyone gets to take advantage of. Cherish and do not take for granted the opportunity but remember that there are plenty of other opportunities in the future as well. Work hard, enjoy yourself and make time to relax. Most importantly, make the most of it.
