Flowers

One of the nicest things you can do to make your apartment seem warmer, cleaner, lighter, and a whole host of other things, is to keep flowers around! They just brighten up every space. They are beautiful to look at, to examine, and even to smell on occasion. There are so many different varieties of flowers as well so you can pick and choose what appeals to you (or what falls in your price range).

You also have the choice of using real flowers or fake ones. Having real flowers is pretty low maintenance except that when the flowers die, you either need to throw them out or replace them. You also need to remember to water them every once in a while. This can be pricey, so instead of getting cut flowers you can always buy a flowering plant that can live comfortably on your coffee table. That way you only pay for the flowers once but you reap the rewards all year round. This does take more effort to maintain, though.

If having live flowers at all just will not do it for you but you are still intrigued, then you can buy fake flowers. There are different levels of detail on your flowers depending on price, so you can go for the quick and simple flowers from the dollar store or you can get high-quality recreations of flowers that will make guests have to touch them in order to discern if they are real or if they are fake.

The only care these flowers will need is to be dusted off every once in a while and moved from direct sunlight, because instead of growing, the light will only cause their color and vibrancy to fade. If you are getting high-quality fake flowers, you will want them to last as long as they possibly can.

Interesting Textbooks

Coffee table books are a real thing — ever heard of them? They are books on topics that are vaguely relatable but that most don’t know much about. They usually have little text and lots of beautiful photographs to draw you in and make you feel like you are learning something, growing more and more cultured as you sit on a couch in someone’s living room, thumbing through a book.

Coffee table books can be expensive, though, so why not use something you already have like a book from a class that was particularly interesting? That is not to suggest that you should just plunk your math textbook out on the coffee table and call it a day. But perhaps you have a book from a class on religion or theater appreciation or of short stories. Any of these books could give someone looking for something to peruse an eyeful and capture their attention.

This way you kill two birds with one stone by finding a new use for a book you might have found interesting but had no further use for. Selling your textbooks back to the campus bookstore (where you are generally underpaid for your returned books) might not be worth the trouble — let your guests get some insight into you and your interests instead.

Slinky

Take a trip down memory lane and provide a slinky for your guests to play with and to adorn your coffee table. Aside from the nostalgia factor, your guests will be enthralled by its mesmerizing quality. Once they pick it up, they might never put it down for the rest of the night. So perhaps only put out the slinky in the case of an emergency?
