3 Steps to Advertising Your Tutoring Services

By Tamiera Vandegrift on December 27, 2016

Throughout your college experience, you’ve probably noticed that you’re more proficient in some subject areas than others. Whether you have excellent reading, writing, math, or science skills, tutoring is definitely a side career to consider while you’re in college.

Tutoring is one of the many wonderful ways to make extra cash while you’re in college. You’ll have the chance to network by helping out your fellow peers. You’ll also add a few marketable traits to your resume. However, your tutoring business will not go very far if you don’t have the right tools to market it to the general public.

Here are some A+ ways to advertise your tutoring services.

Seek out opportunities.

Before you can truly begin to market your service, you need to make sure that you’ve got the right amount of experience and credibility under your belt to do so. Take an extra course or two in the subject that you’re trying to tutor. You will not only come out of the courses with extra knowledge, but also have an extra opportunity to develop your tutoring resume. You can offer yourself to your fellow classmates who are struggling with the material. The students will have the knowledge needed to improve their grade and you’ll have tutoring experience under your belt, as well as good references!

Often you’ll find that students will post their needs on social media or even on flyers around campus. Keep an eye out for these advertisements and be sure to contact these students promptly so that you won’t miss your chance. Make sure that you’re a member of all of your university’s social media groups, especially every group on Facebook. This will ensure that you won’t miss out on any opportunities to expand your experience.

If you aren’t having much luck finding tutoring work on social media or around campus, don’t fret. Seek out local opportunities around your college town. Organizations, like churches or youth programs, seek out collegiate tutors for volunteering or mentoring positions. This would be a perfect tool for professional growth as well as a great thing to add to your tutoring resume.

Build your portfolio.

Once you have more experience under your belt, it’s time to compile that experience into a resume that you’ll be able to share with your potential tutees. Before they’re going to spend their hard-earned money, they’ll want to make sure that you’re qualified enough to help them out.

On this resume, list any and all experiences you have with tutoring, or even teaching. If you have experience tutoring children in high school, list that. If you’ve worked as a TA in the subject that you’re tutoring, list that. If you’ve taken multiple courses in that subject area, list them along with the grades you’ve received in the class.

The more qualifications that you’re able to list, the more professional you’ll appear and the more marketable you’ll be in the end.

Spread the word.

Now that you have experience and an organized portfolio, you’re ready to begin spreading the word about your tutoring services. Create flyers and brochures with your professional contact information, previous experience, and a list of the services that you offer. Make sure that they’re visually interesting and capable of catching a student’s attention right away.

Think of flyers and brochures that you’ve seen on campus that caught your attention pretty quickly. Use large, easy to read fonts and font sizes. Use bright colors, but not a lot of color contrast. Studies have shown that using the color blue will indicate professionalism and trustworthiness, which are two important things to market to your potential customers. Create business cards with a brief summary of your services and your contact information. Be sure to add a picture of yourself on your advertisements as well. Make sure that this picture of you looks as professional as possible. No duck faces or muscle shots are acceptable here.

Disperse these among your family, friends, and students that you’ve worked with in the past. They’ll be sure to spread the word and help you market your business to make sure it reaches its fullest potential.

Also make sure to utilize social media as much as you can. Students will look to their class pages on Facebook to see if anyone is offering academic help. Personally, I’ve posted on social media several times seeking math tutors, so I can testify that Facebook is an excellent source.

Some other sources are Uloop and Wyzant. Uloop is an excellent source for job hunting and apartment hunting, but it can also be a great resource for seeking tutors. Wyzant is another excellent resource, as it works like an online resume where you can create a profile and list all of your experience and qualifications for students to access.
