When it comes to decorating, it can be a bit hard to decide where to start and how exactly to get your whole place to follow a common theme of sorts. You don’t want to get too matchy-matchy, and you don’t want to be mismatched to the point where it looks like random stuff was just dumped into a space, so how do you go about getting just the right look?

It might be a good idea to have some inspiration to go off of, like finding an artist that you like and modeling your decorations in their style. You don’t have to go all out and follow them strictly, but taking an artist’s style as a baseline will give you somewhere to start and will also be a good reference point of color schemes and such. Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Claude Monet

Claude Monet will be great inspiration for your decorating if you love soft colors that will make your place feel peaceful and elegant. He is able to tie a lot of pastel colors in together in his art, especially in the water lily pieces, so you can use these as a guide when you are color scheming each room and deciding how to accentuate your furniture.

If you put a blue throw on your couch to resemble the water, you can have pretty pastel pillows of different colors layering the couch to give it more dimension while keeping the room from running wild. If you stick to the colors that he uses, you don’t run the risk of going too overboard with the color variation. This look is simple and light, and would work very well in a small place.

2. Pablo Picasso:

If Monet’s light colors are too simple for you, why not try Picasso out for your décor muse? His works are vibrant and eye catching, and if you model your decorating after his works, your guests will be fascinated by the place. The key is not to go too overboard with this one, but having a few fun pops of color here and there as well as arranging your furniture and accessories into fun shapes will really give your space its own unique flare.

Even though his works are more eccentric, he is very careful when it comes to detail, especially how he paired the colors on the canvas, so if you choose color pairings that are similar to a Picasso painting, they will still be in conversation with one another and won’t make your room look like a clashing mess.

3. Frida Kahlo:

Frida has some works that are very earthy and representative of mother nature, so maybe these might be just what you need to get inspiration for decorating your place! Earthy color tones are great for a calming atmosphere, and having plants around is great décor and can also give you something to put on that end table that was bare beforehand.

You can get creative about how you make the place earthy, and can change out your plants to give yourself more variety. Frida’s self-portrait would be a good place to start if this theme sounds like it would match the vibe you want to go with.

4. Jen Garrido:

Jen’s contemporary art might be the perfect inspiration if you want your décor to be cutesy and want to try your hand at some DIY crafts. Her work consists predominately of floral workings on the canvas, with a good amount of white space usually, so you can play around with dark and light patterns that you enjoy, without overcrowding your space. She gives me a fun tea party vibe, which can be perfect for your little place that needs a feminine touch.

5. Elizabeth O’Connor:

If you want to pair both vibrant color combinations and cooling color undertones, Elizabeth might be the inspiration for you. She knows her way around the color wheel, and can splash colors together in a way that is both eye catching and calming at the same time. This can be great for getting ideas as to how you want to pair your rug, throw blanket, and wall tapestry, or figuring out how to pair multiple pillows with patterns on them. The key with this is that a lot of color can be involved, but the patterns should be symmetrical, or at least doing similar things to it doesn’t go from eye catching to simply chaotic.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. Where you are into contemporary, modern, abstract, landscape, or any of the other hundreds of styles, you are bound to find one that really speaks to you and that gives you amazing ideas for decorating your place. This will make the decorating process less stressful since you will have a direction, and will allow you to have more fun while doing it. Now get out there and get creative!
