Make sure everything works.

Before you sign any paperwork accepting responsibility for a piece of furniture or appliance, you need to be absolutely sure that it does work. Because once you have signed paperwork and the item stops working, the blame is going to land on you. You might have to pay for it or do any other assortment of unpleasant things that defeats the purpose of renting furniture in the first place.

So before you sign that dotted line, check that the item or items work just as they are supposed to. Check that they work at the store before they are delivered; check that they work immediately upon arrival to your home. Does the ottoman smoothly pop out of the recliner chair that you are renting? Make sure.

Does the pullout bed from the couch you are renting hold weight? Double check. Does the lamp you picked out turn on and off? Plug it in. Does the dining table with extendable features glide smoothly and easily without any issues? Be sure. Be like Santa Claus and check your list twice. You need to be absolutely sure that your furniture is in perfect, tip-top working order.

Note all damage.

Another important thing to do before accepting your rental furniture is to note any and all damage. The furniture that you rent will often have been rented by other people before you. While the furniture might not be in perfect condition, it should still be in a pretty good condition. You need to check if there is any damage, no matter how minuscule, and make sure that the company you are renting the furniture from is aware of it so that you cannot get in trouble later on when you return it. There is nothing worse than being blamed for something that you did not even do!

But if you have no proof and did not point it out to the company before you accepted the rental furniture, how can the company know for sure that you were not the one to damage the furniture? A lot of people are dishonest and how can the company know who to trust? It could be a stain or discoloration on a couch or perhaps a little water damage on a wooden piece of furniture. Just make sure that the company knows that it arrived to you in that condition so that you do not get punished for what someone else did when you return it.

Just like when you move in and out of a dorm room, you have to write down on a form all the damage in a room when you first move in and catalogue it when you move back out so that your RA knows that you are not responsible for any damage in the room over the course of time that you lived in it. This is the same principle; live by it. Do not forget about it!

Know how to clean it.

While it is great that you can return rental furniture when you want to, you need to be able to return it in the same condition that you received it in so that you can avoid any penalties that might come with such damage. We all have little accidents; little spills that just happen in daily life. So you should find out the best way to keep your rental furniture clean. Eat on the couch and accidentally get a drop on the couch? Know what to do that can remove that drop instantly before a stain can set in.

Sometimes certain cleaning supplies will not work on certain materials and by using the wrong supplies you could make a stain or any damage worse so it is good to be prepared and know not only what will work to clean your rental furniture but also what will not clean your rental furniture.

You may also want to do standard maintenance to keep your rental furniture fresh and clean and having that information will be handy so that you can keep everything in tip-top shape.
