As we get older, it becomes a bit trickier trying to figure out what to buy our friends for the holidays. What consisted of scanning through the toy aisle a few years ago now becomes a sort of anxiety: finding the perfect gift for a good price that won’t break the bank.

If your friends are living on their own and have some new rental furniture that they haven’t decorated yet or really made their own, why not help them with that? We are at the age now where getting someone a fun throw pillow to make their living room pop is an acceptable gift, so why not have some fun on the decorating front?

Here are some ideas that can get you started.

For the couch

If your friends just rented a new couch, they might need your help with sprucing it up and making it fit in with their style. You could get them a cozy blanket with a pop of color that they can drape over the side of the couch — just make sure you know the color scheme that their living room is going for first. You can get a matching set of pillows that are decorative and small, big and comfy, or some of each.

My go-to place for cute pillows for a decent price is World Market. From patterns to cute animals, World Market is bound to have a pillow or two that will be perfect for your friend’s new couch.

You could also opt for making them a pillow or a blanket that they can adorn their new couch with. Getting crafty for the holidays shows your friends how much you care about them with a personalized touch. If the DIY doesn’t come out as Pinterest said it would, you can always give them your attempt as a gag gift and then have a store-bought one on hand. It will be a great laugh and they will still get some décor out of it.

For the coffee/end table

If they recently rented a little coffee table or end table and haven’t found exactly what to adorn it with, you can surprise them with a fun gift to display on either table. You can go to a candle store and pick out a fun scent for them, complete with a cute holiday candleholder that they can keep for years to come.

You could buy them some books that they have been craving, along with some bookends, and then show them how to arrange it on the coffee or end table when they open it. You could buy them some coasters for the coffee table, so when they have you and some other people over, no one’s drink will leave a ring on the coffee table.

You know your friend best, so tailor your choice to them to make their coffee or end table complete the room.

For the dining table

If they just rented a dining table, you can try and gift them some extra accessories that they haven’t had a chance to buy yet. Maybe they don’t have a cute tablecloth, or placemats, or a nice centerpiece for the table yet (candles work well for the centerpiece).

If you aren’t sure what they need, pay a visit to their place and make a mental note of what is on the table. Ask them slyly about what color they think works best to tie their kitchen and dining room together in a way where they won’t know that you are going to buy them anything related to that.

For the bed

If your friend just rented a bed, you could opt to buy them a second set of sheets. This is something college students always need since laundry day doesn’t end up coming around as often as it should, so they will be grateful to have your spare pair that they can dress their bed in when they are in a bind.

You can also opt for décor that goes around the bed, like hanging tee lights, lamps, puff decoration balls, or a princess canopy to make their bedroom extra comfy. You can get a picture or two that they can hang above the bed, or a cute throw rug to go next to it.

If you know their taste, you could also get them some pillows to match the bedding that they already have, or a nice fuzzy blanket that matches their room for them to cuddle up with on those cold winter nights.

These are just a few ideas to get you started on the gift ideas. Home décor is really fun to shop for, especially when your friend opens it and wants to display it right away. Use your best judgment for what they would benefit from the most, but always provide a gift receipt in case you didn’t get exactly what they were going for to complete their theme. Happy shopping!
