DIY Fall Decorations For Your Apartment

By Allie Mitchell on September 30, 2016

That time of the year is upon us. The time of the year that most people can’t wait for. The season where you start to bring out your sweaters and the leaves start to change into beautiful colors that you can’t help but stare at in awe. The year of hot chocolate and Halloween movies. I’m talking about the fall season.

The over-heating summer sun has started to go away and the breezy wind of the new season is starting to rear its pretty little head. You are all set for the new season and sit and wait in anticipation to be completely immersed in the fall festivities. People go pumpkin picking, hot apple cider is available and plenty of classic Halloween movies are on for all you couch potatoes to get your fall fix.

There is one other thing that can bring in the fall fun: fun projects to do by yourself or with your roommates. DIY projects are of course not for everyone, along with not everyone is a crafty human being, but there are quite a few out there for those that would love to find other (more hands-on) things to do besides carve a pumpkin or make festive cookies. You want something that is going to be fun but also time consuming in a way where if hours go by, you hardly notice because of how much you are enjoying yourself.

Pinterest is a number one hotspot for finding DIY projects, some for beginners and some for people who basically eat, sleep, and breathe do-it-yourself. You can practically find anything and everything on there, for all your project needs, but for this article I’m going to focus more on fall DIY projects that can make your apartment feel just as ready as you for the fall season.

Centerpiece flowers: Your coffee table will probably get all lonely with only some candles or maybe just some magazines on top of it, so why not make some simple centerpieces? The only things you really need are some mason jars and some fake (or real) fall colored flowers. Mason jars can normally be found at your local craft store or stores like Walmart.

Centerpiece leaves: Now if flowers aren’t your thing, then maybe this particular project might be. Using the same mason jar and a good old jar of mod podge, take some fake leaves (or I suppose real leaves) and glue them to the outside of the jar. Tie some twine around the open jar and place a fall smelling candle inside. The beautiful color you will see will be breathtaking.

Table pieces: Simple as it seems, putting twigs in a glass full of water with a floating candle on top can be just as pretty to look at. It can give your apartment that outdoorsy feel that most people like to go for, but don’t know how to pull off sometimes. Or you can go rustic and glue some twigs around the outside of a glass, place a candle inside and have yourself a woodsy votive. It is really all up to you in the end.

Wreaths: Everyone loves a good decorative wreath, especially to go outside of your door. It is just as welcoming as the traditional welcome mat. Wreaths are completely customizable as well; there is really no one way to make a “normal” decorative wreath. You can go all out or keep it simple.

Supplies can vary from twine to grapevine to anything else that is sturdy enough to hold everything you want. Make it your own. Add small details like ribbons or small feathers or pumpkins. Add glitter or googly eyes if that suits you.

Flowerpots: Pumpkins aren’t only for carving funny/scary faces into or making a pie out of. Pumpkins can also be used to make home grown decorations, including exclusive pumpkin flowerpots. The only manual labor you will have to endure is actually carving out the inside of the pumpkin and making sure it is clean and empty on the inside.

When that is all said and done, you can place your favorite flowers in there to make a cute little decorative piece in or outside of your home. If you want, I suppose you could also carve a face on the side and make the pumpkin more versatile when that time of the year comes around.

Projects of any kind are supposed to be fun and make you feel a sense of accomplishment when you are done. It should make you want to go on to the next thing and the next thing. You should be able to sit back and say wow, I did this.
