As a college student, let’s face it: you’re probably going to eat, sleep, and breathe at your desk.

So if you’re going to have to use it, then you might as well make sure it has everything you need to get through your next all-nighter.

1. Desktop organizers

Desktop organizers are the best way to keep your workspace looking neat while adding a bit of style. You’ll want an organizer (or set of matching or tastefully mismatched organizer components like a pencil holder, paper tray, et cetera) that can hold a lot. The last thing you need is to run out of highlighter or space for loose papers, so it’s best to make sure you’ve got room for loads of extra supplies.

2. Lamps

Are you really going to use the lamp on your desk? Maybe, if you’re desperate and it’s three in the morning. Is it going to look really cute sitting there and adding a dash of color, even when you’re not using it? Absolutely.

A desk lamp is a great way to brighten up your workspace. If you’re going for a cute, modern look, you can find single color pastel lamps. If you’re looking for something more on the quirky side, there are plenty of silly themed lamps you can find on just about any site that sells dorm supplies. Even the children’s aisle in your local Target or Walmart will have plenty of adorable desk lamps, from unicorns to dinosaurs to monster trucks, or whatever childish thing we all secretly wish we had.

3. Desktop calendar

You know that you’re going to think of something you need to do while working. You tell yourself that you won’t forget, but you know you’re going to forget anyway. With a desktop calendar you can write down whatever crosses your mind without the hassle of having to lug out your agenda or pull up your online version.

It doesn’t have to be the black and white plain kind that adults in cubicles tend to use (unless that’s the kind of look you’re going for). There are plenty of calendar pads out there that are themed to fit your personal style, from frilly designs like this to cleaner patterns that will fit almost any desktop color scheme.

4. Sticky notes

You’re probably going to need a lot of these, from marking pages in the rental textbook you can’t highlight sentences in or to jotting down your seemingly endless to-do list. But if you’re going to use sticky notes, why not get cute ones? You can get sticky notes shaped like beards, hedgehogs, and even ones shaped like Tetris blocks so you can continue playing instead of working.

5. Pencil sharpener

You tell yourself you don’t need one. In fact, you hardly ever need one. Maybe you write exclusively in pen! But somehow, every semester you end up needing one anyway. If it’s going to be taking up precious desk space, then it had better be contributing to the aesthetic you’re crafting. Get anything from precious little pastel owls to cuter versions of the classic hand cranked ones from when you were a kid.

6. Framed photographs

It could be of your favorite city’s skyline, a loved one, a treasured group of friends, or, if we’re being honest, your pet. Framed desktop photos add a touch of personality to your desk, in addition to giving you some motivation when you’re powering through a tough homework assignment. While the subject(s) of the photo matter far more than the frame, a cute one can spice up your desk and bring out the color and fun in the starring photo.

A cute, simple gold frame like this one offered by Modcloth draws attention to classic photos (especially ones staring landscapes or animals). Frames that offer room for multiple photos allow you to bring together some of your favorite people, pets, or sights, or group certain photos together to fit a theme.

7. Animals and plants, oh my!

The best way to brighten up your workspace is with a dash of life, something beautiful to look at when you’re feeling stressed. You might want to nestle a small fish tank between your organizers and photos, if you’re up for cleaning it and feeding your adorable new friend. Look for fish that don’t grow too big, like beta fish or other relatively small fish that prefer to live alone. If you don’t have the motivation to take care of fish or other little critters, you might want to look into plants. A cute miniature plant gives your desk a homey feel, and best of all, they’re easy to care for. But if that stresses you out too, a fake plant will do just as well. It’s still going to look pretty.

You can litter your desk in knick knacks, keep it sleek and modern with a color-coded theme, or even just mix up lots of patterns to create something that really speaks to your personality. Selecting the perfect essentials adds spunk to your workspace, and the best part is, desk supplies can be found just about everywhere. It’s easy to craft the ideal workspace if you know what to look for, and now you do!
