Moving into your first apartment is an exciting prospect. It’s the first time you are able to make your abode something that is truly yours, not just a house but a home. There are no rules (well there might be a few) and nothing to stop you but your own imaginations and means in transforming your first apartment into exactly what you want it to be.

Actually, your means can be a huge factor in deciding how you live in your apartment. It can take a lot of dough to get all the furniture you feel you need to live comfortably and you might not be able to afford it all at once or find exactly what you are looking for in your budget right when you need it.

So why not rent it? Read on to learn what the recommended furniture is that you really need to rent for your first apartment!

Couch

Off the bat, this might not seem like the most important piece of furniture that you should get for your apartment but, in reality, it is! A couch can be extremely multi-purpose and handy. If you could only afford to rent one piece of furniture, a couch is definitely the thing for you.

Do not underestimate the simple use for a couch: just sitting. Sure you have a floor to sit on and a wall to lean against, which will work in a pinch, but after a while it is not that comfortable and your back will begin to ache. But a couch will support you and your friends, giving many of you a comfortable place to sit, more than a chair could provide.

Need a place to work? You can sit comfortably and get your work done on it in substitution for a desk, using the arm to lean on. Need a place to eat? A table might be helpful, but you can do without as long as you have a place to sit, your couch, and the arm of it can once again be useful to lean on.

Need a place to sleep? You can stretch out on your couch and catch some zzzzz’s even if you do not have a bed. And I can guarantee that your couch will be more comfortable than the floor.

Table and Chairs

A dining set is the next logical step because it serves many purposes as well if you are limited in how much furniture you can get at once. Like a couch, it provides you and your roommates and friends a place to sit and just be.

But more than that, it gives you a comfortable (and less messy and disaster prone) place to sit and eat. The idea of sitting on a couch to eat your meals can be off-putting for some, especially for those that like to break bread together, making conversation and eye contact as they eat.

You will not ruin the table if you spill something on it like you would if you ate on a couch (spoiler alert) and did the same thing. And for those messy eaters, it will be easier to get the eating utensil and food to your mouth without dropping your food, and if you do, it will not stain the table or get lost inside it.

And if you need to work, a table and chair can be just as helpful as a desk. You have a surface to lean on and keep all your materials on and the ability to spread out as you do your work.

Desk

If getting your work done is of the utmost importance and you really need a professional and tidy space to do so, then a desk is the next logical piece of furniture that you should rent. You can put your desk wherever you think that you will get your work done most efficiently, a quiet, private space to just spread out so you can study and do your work the way that you need to.

You can keep all your supplies, like pens, papers, books, and pencils handy and keep the extras you need, like a lamp, in close proximity. You can even put a framed picture of something special that you can glance at when the going gets tough and you need a little bit more motivation to finish slogging through your studies.

Another great aspect of having your own desk is that it is not in a common space if you have roommates and you do not have to share the space so you can really study, work, and learn the way that you do best in. It can also be a great place to sit and watch Netflix from your laptop or other relaxing activities you need to participate in so you can wind down.
