Don't Get Caught In Your First Apartment Without These Easily Overlooked Items

By Danielle Wirsansky on September 6, 2016

Moving into your first apartment is a liberating experience. You are on your own, in charge of your own domain, for the very first time. You hold all the power and it is easy to let all that power go to your head, but just because you have all the power does not mean you know what to do with it.

Remember, this is your first apartment. You do not really know what you are doing yet.

So there are some easily overlooked items that you will need in your first apartment that will help your transition to independent apartment living go so smoothly, you really will hold all the power.

Read on to discover them!

First Aid Kit

Your mom might have suggested this and you might have scoffed at the idea of it, thinking it overbearing. You do not really get sick. Okay, you almost never get sick.

But what if you do?

It is always better to be safe than sorry. If you do fall ill or something happens, you should be prepared! And often you can get sick when you move into a new place or apartment because your environment is changing and your body does not know what to expect. And if you do fall ill at any point while in your first apartment, you will have what you need to nip it in the bud so you do not get any sicker.

A thermometer, Motrin, band-aids, alcohol or peroxide to sterilize wounds, a decongestant, and Neosporin are all great staples to include.

Vacuum

When you move into your first apartment, you have to remember that just because it is your first apartment, does not mean that you are the first person to live in it. And while your apartment might look fine on the surface, if you delve any deeper, you might find that there is dirt, dust, and grit.

You would also be surprised at how quickly your floor will get dirty and how often a mess will be made. You do not want to allow a mess to sit in your carpet, dry, and stain it. You want your deposit back, don’t you? Make sure you have a vacuum so you can stay on top of any messes that may occur and keep your living space as hygienic as possible.

Trash Can

Trash cans as household items are most definitely overlooked much of the time. But do you really want to be that person without a kitchen garbage can that has just a trash bag sitting forlornly on the floor? Trash bags can also leak, making a big, stinky, wet mess.

Trash cans are not that expensive, so keep your apartment to a simple but classy standard and own yourself a garbage can. It will keep your apartment more organized without garbage laying around and more hygienic as all your garbage will be contained and it will help to deter bugs from poking their pesky noses into your apartment.

It is often a good idea to also have a trash can in every room as well to help decrease trash buildup. Do not forget a trash can for your bathroom either because there are some things that you might not want thrown away in your kitchen.

Battery Operated Fan/Flashlight

These might sound like fripperies, unnecessary items that you do not need, but believe me they can come in handy. No matter where you live, you will be at risk for natural disasters. And while I hope that you will never again be affected by one, there is no guarantee that you will not be.

It is better to be prepared then suffer when the weather strikes. If you lose power, you will lose light. During the day you should be fine because the sun is shining. But at night? There is no light! It will be almost impossible to see in your apartment or to navigate it. How will you use the bathroom?

A flashlight can help you to survive in the darkest of nights. And if it is storming during the day, making it dark in your apartment during the day as well, you will also be covered.

Something to keep in mind as well is that when you lose power you do not just lose light. You will also lose air conditioning! Your apartment will quickly get stuffy too as air circulation decreases. And if it is storming outside, you will not be able to open your windows to help.

So a battery operated fan could save your life and your sanity as you sweat in the dark, trapped in your apartment. Not a pretty picture, but it will certainly be less bleak with a battery operated fan and flashlight.
