It is no secret that when owning a pet, they seem to think that what is ours is equally theirs. False. Given they are animals, they receive slightly different treatment than us humans. Harsh, I know.

For instance, they are not always allowed on our bed or couch, and they have to use the potty outside. Cats, of course you are the exception. Simple enough rules.

To make sure that they do not destroy all of your home items, there are ways to pet-proof your house or apartment. Especially in the furniture department. Just read below and keep your pet at a safe distance when doing so because they may become depressed if they see this. And you would not want them to know all of your secrets, right?

Tie in decorating.

Decorating your house is key if wanting it to look presentable all while representing you — which you do. There are many things you can decorate your place with that are pet-safe and friendly. And the good news is that you can purchase them remotely anywhere because there will always be a close-by Walmart or thrift store. Say yes to thrifting, people.

Rugs will become your best friend (sorry, dogs) because they are so incredibly easy to clean. All you need is a vacuum and you are good to go. Plus, they are fashionable and necessary: the best of both worlds. If your animal sheds a lot, which is most likely the case, then this is an easy fix too.

For your couches and chairs, it is super simple and slightly inexpensive (depending), to purchase covers that can conveniently be taken off and thrown into the wash. This works great with pillows and tables even. Especially if your cat tends to live on the dining room table. Guilty.

Use special fabrics.

Fabric is going to be found all throughout your house for obvious reasons. It is a must. It is all over your furniture, your walls, and of course you because hello clothes. Unless you are not into that, that is.

You want to buy fabric that is 100 percent washable, and by this I mean can literally be submerged in water and soap and still look close to brand new. That is always the goal, guys. Plus, since your pets are basically everywhere all at once, this is an easy method to keeping your area somewhat neat in all of its chaos. I am right there with ya, buddy.

There can be special fabric for your bed, your curtains, and your towels. With your clothes, there is always the option of owning a lint roller which I definitely recommend, and this way, a tiny hole from your pet’s random panic attack does not mean the end of the world. Trust me, it does not. And if it just so happens to be your all-time favorite shirt, then the animal who committed the crime deserves a little time out. No harm in that.

Recommend toys.

If you are a pet owner, which I assume you are because why else have you made it this far in the article, then I fully expect you to know that toys are imperative when owning a pet. You should also know that there are various toys, all different shapes, sizes and noises. There are approximately a million pet toys that exist precisely right this second in the universe.

The point is, without toys found in your house, your animals will resort to playing with your nice furniture, which we never want to be the case. They will make a scratching post out of your chair leg, and play fetch with your satin blanket that you keep firmly at the end of your bed. Not good.

Animals innately desire to play with things, so you have to provide them with said things. Unless you want your bookcase torn to pieces, which I can guarantee is a no. And this way, your pet can still know that you love them because you have gifted them with so many great, squeaky toys. Way to go, you pet owner you.

Owning a pet is a lot of work. Minus all of the hours of training that is put into them, and the amount of love that they properly deserve, there is still a ton of room left over in playing with them, keeping them safe, and more importantly, keeping your furniture safe.

You want to have a good time with your pet, all while making sure that your couch is not destroyed and that your carpet still looks relatively like a carpet by the end of the day.

The proper route to take is to decorate your house to pet friendly standards, use as many special fabrics as you can get your hands on, and provide your pets with tons of toys. You will be oh so happy to know that your house will not be a complete disaster thanks to your pet’s doing.
