Tallahassee Summer Theatre Master-Post

By Trevor Durham on July 1, 2016

You’re in Tallahassee for the summer, a choice made by not many college students (perhaps for the better of everybody involved). As locals know, this means the town quiets down a bit, something that steals a bit of air from the art communities lungs. Fear not, the performance spaces haven’t collected dust, and the summer is still full for those wishing to see live entertainment.

Lots of buzz has generated around some original pieces, some adaptations, and some just plain fun shows. The upcoming Tallahassee theatrical events to look forward to include:

  • AntigoneDirected by local favorite Jeffrey Mandel, Antigone is the third part of the Greek Theban trilogy, the famous tragedy cycle that began with Oedipus.  The modernized adaptation, dealing with World War II themes, offer a fresh take on one of theatre’s oldest pieces. Locals will recall the Oedipus that began this Tallahassee cycle, but director Mandel wants audiences to know that his performance will be as fresh to new eyes as those who saw the first two. Running July 22-31st at the Schnittman Theatre (of Mickee Faust),
  •  The Little Mermaid
Leon High School presents their summer musical, one with high schoolers from around the area. This musical should be good fun for the whole family, offering something the other shows on the list don’t- appropriate, quality enjoyment. Leon can be counted on for consistent performance quality, and this show is sure to be something that fills the hearts of the lonely Tallahassee streets. Running July 15th-24th, tickets can be purchased online.
  • Lizzy, Darcy & JanePlaying at the Monticello Opera House, this musical follows an alternate path of the romantic classic Pride and Prejudice. The show, by Joanna Norland and presented by Jane & Company, will feature a live accompaniment and promises a very interesting night. Performances run July 15th-24th, and tickets can be purchased here.
  • Hotel 99
To celebrate their 15th year, the Pyramid Players will be showing off an original musical, co-written by their Pyramid Studio playwriting class. With an absurd plot based around 70s celebrities, this comedy sounds like a smash. Doors open early for an art show, auction, and delicious hors d’oeuvres. The show premieres August 13th at 5pm, and tickets may be purchased here.
  • Avenue Q
One of Broadways’ most filthy shows (not as dirty as Urinetown, but these puppets snatched the Tony from Wicked) is making landfall at Theatre Tallahassee towards the end of the summer. With a great cast, from FSU and TCC students to Tallahassee natives,  and directed by JC Carr (who was last seen in Agnes of God and White Christmas), the show is a variety of wacky people to fill the wacky puppetry. Bobby Lopez’ delirious musical hit is going to be one of the strongest shows of the season, and should not be missed. Tickets for the show, opening August 18th-September 4th, can be found here.
  • The Producers
The Quincy Music Theatre is tackling Mel Brook’s infamous Tony-awarded smash (with more than Hamilton, really, look it up) with an all-star cast of who’s-who in Tallahassee. The musical powerhouse, with more catchy numbers that you could imagine, has an enormous ensemble of hilarious characters that will usher the summer out as the fall returns to Tallahassee. This is one you can’t miss. The show performs from August 19-28, tickets can be reserved here.
