Volunteering may just be the perfect activity to add to your life if you’re looking to reach out into your community. In a city as big, vivacious, and diverse as Atlanta, the volunteering opportunities are just as variant.

Knowing that you want to volunteer is the first step, but figuring out how and where can be even trickier. Having a general idea of what to look for is the perfect place to start.

With some ideas outlined in this article, finding your next home as a volunteer will smooth itself out before you know it.

Here are six ways to volunteer in Atlanta.

1. Animal shelter

Do you have a soft spot for animals, but not enough room or time to get a furry friend of your own? Volunteering at a local pet rescue or humane society could be just the thing to get your pet fix. By doing this, you’ll help save lots of animal lives and cut down on employee costs.

Plus, you’ll be spending hours among the things you love most: animals themselves. This could mean playing with the animals, feeding them, or cleaning cages. If you’re interested in veterinary medicine, you could even observe the medical facilities. Lots of shelters exist in Atlanta for volunteering. Here are a few:

2. Big Brothers Big Sisters

Like many large cities, inner city kids are in need of positive mentors to bring quality time and activities into their lives. If you enjoy helping and hanging out with kids of all kinds, consider mentoring a child at Big Brothers Big Sisters.

With this program, you’ll know that you’re influencing a child’s life directly and the encouragement you give them now could very well change their life forever. Find out about Big Brothers and Sisters in Atlanta here.

3. Park clean-up

As much as we’re preached to about littering, it still remains a large issue especially in urban environments filled up with people. Even in the prettiest and most natural areas, trash will accumulate. Public parks are loved and used by many people, but this brings lots of litter.

Being funded mostly by cities, budgets for maintaining said parks are generally low and the upkeep can be tricky. Volunteering to clean up parks and other areas will ease the frequent pain many places like this face. One place to look at volunteering is Piedmont Park.

4. Tutoring kids

You may feel drawn to kids, but that mentoring them one-on-one just isn’t for you. Perhaps you have a specialty in some sort of field that could be put to good use. Tutoring kids may just be the volunteering place for you. Many kids will struggle or lag behind in school, but can’t afford to pay for a private tutor.

Whether it be English, math, science or something else entirely, there is bound to be someone out there who could use your help. Check out Hands On Atlanta for information on tutoring kids.

5. Senior centers

Some of us aren’t too fond of kids and that’s totally fine. If you’re more inclined to the older crowd, take a look at volunteering at a senior center. Volunteering at a senior center often doesn’t involve doing much besides listening, playing games, and just being good company to the residents.

There are lots of opportunities. At Emory Healthcare, for instance, you can volunteer in multiple things like pet therapy and as a food helper. Many seniors have tons of interesting stories about their pasts and you may find inspiration and life lessons here. Find out more about Emory Healthcare’s opportunities here.

6. One12 soup kitchen

Looking for ways to volunteer can be as easy as looking around the place you live. Certain apartment complexes and residential areas will have teams of volunteers that can do various things from cleaning up the area to assisting neighbors.

The One12 Courtland apartments host a team of volunteers that regularly serves at a local soup kitchen. Getting involved with the people you live with and around can be a great way to meet and interact with your community.

Whether you’re an older resident of Atlanta or a new arrival, volunteering will make you feel infinitely more attached and at home in the community. Giving back will give you the opportunity to meet new people and the peace of mind knowing that you’re making a difference. It could be with kids, with pets, with elders, or maybe doing something completely different.

If none of these places spark your fancy, ask around the places you like going about volunteering. If you love going somewhere, odds are that other people do too and they could use the extra help. Every volunteer counts so go out there and find the place that suits you. You won’t regret it.
