8 Unique Fitness Classes To Help You Stay In Shape

Let’s face it, running the same five miles or lifting the same five weights every day can get a little tedious. For some people, the allure to work out doesn’t outmatch the need to enjoy it.

Different people require various amounts of encouragement, motivation, challenge, and fun all wrapped into one. No one style or class of working out is great for everyone. Lucky for us, there are a whole host of unique fitness classes to fit your individual needs.

Here are eight unique fitness classes to help you stay in shape.

1. Zumba

It seems everybody is after the coveted dancer’s body. So who better to take a class from than dancers themselves? Zumba is a combination of Latin, hip hop, and jazz moves set to heart pumping music that is sure to get you up and moving. You just can’t help but shake your hips to the beat! So distracted by the fun you’re having dancing, sometimes you’ll even forget that you’re working out and not at your favorite dance club.

2. Aqua Zumba

Do you like water and Zumba? Stop spending your days wishing for Aqua Zumba because it exists! With all the same feel of Latin beats and popular tunes, you can do much the same thing in normal Zumba, but in water. This is especially great for people with weak joints that normal Zumba might strain. Also, if you’re embarrassed about how you look while working out, being in water hides much of your body and everyone else flails just as much as you do.

3. Pure Barre

Continuing along the theme of dance, the new craze of Pure Barre is sweeping the country. Rooted in the traditional training a ballerina does at the barre, Pure Barre will tone and discipline your body. Ballet dancers use a multitude of muscles in every movement, so Pure Barre won’t just tone your legs or your core, but your entire body. This class will make you have a new appreciation for how much skill goes into a dancer moving so effortlessly.

4. Rock Climbing

Outside of just dancing, there is the more rugged activity that is rock climbing. As most YMCA’s have rock walls, it isn’t difficult to find ways to learn to rock climb. Rock climbing has many benefits like toning your upper body strength and your mind.

Much of the skill of rock climbing comes from choosing the right way up, forcing you to problem solve your way around the wall. Also, if you find out that you really enjoy rock climbing, you can take your love outdoors and explore nature while doing it.

5. PiYo

A combination of Pilates and yoga, it combines all the best of core workouts and gentle strengthening. You won’t have to choose between the two any more. PiYo combines the best of both in a unique class. This way, you won’t have to sacrifice your muscle tone or your meditation to achieve peak results. Some gyms in major cities offer classes like PiYo, but videos can be found online so you can PiYo anywhere.

6. Ballroom Dancing

Much like the other types of dance I’ve talked about, the best thing about staying in shape by dancing is how little it feels like working out. Ballroom dancing is extremely diverse and offers plenty of choices to cater to many people. From a sexy salsa to a jiving swing dance, ballroom dancing is for everyone. It’s also a great way to meet new people, plus if you have a special someone in your life willing to ballroom dance with you, it can greatly improve your connection.

7. Martial Arts

While many other aspects of fitness focus on pure strength or stamina, many of the martial arts like Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and Mixed Martial Arts focus on other things like balance and discipline. You must be more than just a good athlete to excel in martial arts. The training involved comes not just from training your body, but also your mind.

8. CrossFit

CrossFit seems to be the new craze sweeping the nation. Fitness gurus swear by its powers to motivate and challenge. CrossFit is described as varied functional movements of high intensity. Combining multiple genres of fitness, it pulls its inspiration from gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing, and more. CrossFit seems to be most effective in groups where a close knit community is formed from the training they do together.

It may be difficult to break from your fitness routine at first, but trying something new can produce massive rewards. Keeping your body challenged by new movements and workouts not only keeps you in better shape, but keeps your mind from dreading the routine. Any of these unique fitness classes are sure to get your body moving and your mind happier while doing it.
