9 Products That Soothe Winter Chills and Dry Skin

By Amanda Cohen on January 30, 2016

As the aftermath of Snowmaggedon comes to a close, I can really take the time to appreciate the season that I took for granted: summer. Even though I complained of the heat, the bees, and the pollen, I secretly reveled in all the good that summer brings. Tan skin, jean shorts, bikinis, beach waves, and most importantly, moisturized skin and lips.

This article is unfortunately taking longer than usual for me to type because I have to continue reapplying hand lotion every five minutes — I’m so happy that I decided to attend college in the frigid Midwest!

Now, instead of pulling out your violin and playing a solemn tune, I have devised a list of products that will leave your skin feeling smooth and your spirits high.

Aquaphor: Aquaphor is seriously a gift sent from above. Whether your issue is cracked lips, peeling skin, or dry cuticles, Aquaphor is the answer. Ask any of my friends and they will tell you that I swear by this insanely useful skincare product and I use it on my lips religiously.

Immediately when you apply Aquaphor to the effected area, you feel a sense of relief because the product itself is smooth in texture and thick enough to provide a layer of protection. You will never feel greasy or oily when using Aquaphor, you will just have soft lips, uncracked skin, and smooth cuticles.

EltaMD Moisturizer: It is so hard to find a facial moisturizer that provides hydration without the oily-feeling that comes when you are breaking out. EltaMD Moisturizer hydrates your skin without giving you a shiny t-zone on your face.

The best part about EltaMD is that it comes in different varieties that offer various skin-healing benefits, including, but not limited to, SPF protection, anti-aging mechanisms, dark-tinted for tanning, wrinkle prevention, and more.

Unfortunately, EltaMD is not usually sold by your local drug store, but thousands of online shops sell the product for a great price (if you use Amazon Prime you even get free two-day shipping)!

Avène Oil-Free Gel Cleanser: Having sensitive skin can be a real pain at times, but because of my sensitive skin, I find products that are helpful with healing dry skin. After performing a long trial-and-error process of finding the perfect skin cleanser, I finally stumbled upon Avène Oil-Free Gel Cleanser.

When I first purchased the product I was skeptical because just by appearance, the cleanser does not look like it would have any actual cleaning properties. However, ever since I purchased the cleanser my senior year of high school, I haven’t switched products. My skin is cleaner, I do not break out as often, and since it is made for sensitive skin, it does not dry out your face at all!

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm: The thing about Burt’s Bees is that you either absolutely love it and won’t go anywhere without it, or you hate it and think that it does more harm than good.

I use Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm multiple times a day because it heals your lips, but does not make them look too glossy, which I kind of like. I also don’t like feeling that I have lots of chap stick on, and I never feel this way when I use the Beeswax Lip Balm.

However, I do not recommend the tinted/flavored lip balms offered by Burt’s Bees: I don’t think they have any effect whatsoever. At night, I even apply Burt’s Bees on top of my Aquaphor so that I have both the soothing effect from Aquaphor and the healing effect from Burt’s Bees.

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion: Dry legs are not only strange looking, but are also extremely uncomfortable. You would think that peeling would only be terrible after a bad sunburn, but the cold causes your legs to get so scaly to the point where you might as well be peeling.

Even though there are thousands of great body lotions out there, I always use Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. Aveeno caters to people who have extremely sensitive skin, like myself. When I apply the lotion, I don’t feel itchy or pasty, and the healing benefits are incomparable. Apply the lotion always when you get out of the shower and sometimes apply it in the morning … you will not be disappointed with the results!

Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment: I know this one sounds strange, but just trust me it works. Like I said earlier, Aveeno makes their products specifically for those people with sensitive skin. With the winter comes cold weather, which means you will probably want to take a steaming hot shower or sit in a relaxing hot bath. The issue with this is that the hot water combined with the cold makes your skin even drier.

So what do you do? If you are planning on sitting in a bath, instead of bubbles, pour in Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment. This product contains oatmeal that heals your skin and helps with itchiness; oatmeal baths are not just for youngsters with Chicken Pox. The product may not be as glamorous as bubble bath from Molton Brown, but it is definitely a lot better for your skin.

Nivea Creme: I love having soft hands, but I hate the sticky feeling of applying lotion and how it can be difficult to grip pens and pencils. It took me a while to find a hand cream that was healing effective, but not too heavy, but when I did I never used another brand.

Nivea Creme is simply a hand lotion that promotes uncracked and soft skin. You can apply the cream every five minutes and it still won’t give you the oily, sticky feeling that other hand lotions do. The cream itself is firm, rather than runny, and can be scooped out of the container. Carry a travel-sized Nivea Creme in your backpack.

Moisturizing Gloves: I know this sounds extremely odd, but moisturizing gloves are under-used miracle workers. Seriously, go to your local drug store and find a cheap pair of moisture-encasing gloves and then go home and apply lots of lotion and Aquaphor to your hands, put the gloves on, and just chill for as long as possible (I would even sleep with mine on).

After just an hour your hands will begin healing and will feel just as soft as a baby’s skin. The odd feeling of wearing the gloves goes away after a few minutes and you can text with them; talk about a game changer. Since the gloves can be uncomfortable, I recommend using them at least three times a week (wash on the days that you are not using them). Your hands will soften up before you know it!

Cortizone 10 Intensive Healing: After trying nearly a dozen prescribed creams for eczema, I finally decided to buy over-the-counter Cortizone 10. After using the cream once a day for two weeks, my eczema was invisible and I was no longer itchy; talk about a miracle.

Not only did I use the cream for my eczema, I used it for cracked skin from the cold and irritated skin from all of the heavy wool layers I had to wear when walking outside. The redness and dryness for both went away after a couple of days and now I use Cortizone 10 on my skin for just about everything (except for my face).

Everyone go to your local drug store or go on Amazon to buy at least a few of these products. Say goodbye to cracked, red, itchy skin and say hello to hydrated, glowing, fresh skin. It doesn’t have to be summer to achieve the perfect skin texture!
