The Golden Globes: A Red Carpet Runway

By Amanda Cohen on January 18, 2016

The Golden Globes … a time to honor and reward those men and women who have contributed to the overall amazingness of the television and film industry.

Even though I commend those actors and actresses who have risen above and won one of the beautiful, golden trophies, I personally watch the Golden Globes to see what the attendees are wearing when they walk down the red carpet.

If you are reading this article with angry eyes and pursed lips because I am focusing only on women’s fashion rather than their accomplishments, viewing me as sexist and incompetent, you could not be further from incorrect.

I am a fashion columnist; I focus solely on fashion … I am not downsizing any of these women’s accomplishments or degrading their contribution to television and film. Now, without further ado, here are some of my favorite looks for this year’s Golden Globes.

Nina Dobrev

Nina Dobrev looked absolutely fierce in her tight-fitting, pink lace Max Azria Atelier gown. The gown fit her like a glove, and her body looked unbelievable (even though she would look amazing in anything she would wear).

The beige mesh lines of fabric looked perfect with the light pink lace. Even though the gown was definitely tight, it was appropriate and the long train of fabric made the dress even more elegant. Usually I don’t wear necklines that are that high up with extremely short sleeves, but I might convert my style because I love this shape on Dobrev.

Stunning, talented, and kind … the trifecta.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander embodied Gossip Girl’s very own Blair Waldorf’s amazing, but consistently classy, style. I honestly was in awe in how beautiful Vikander looked in the white, floor-length Louis Vuitton number.

The dress itself alludes an almost innocent vibe, because of the ruffle, the high neckline, and the vertically striped fabric. Even though I would not have chosen to wear this dress if I were walking down the red carpet, the dress suits Vikander and was definitely something different and unexpected in this day and age of fashion.

The only issue I had is the belt-like midsection of the dress; it made the dress look a little apron-like. Other than that though, Louis Vuitton designed a killer dress and Alicia Vikander looked flawless per usual.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Atelier Versace floor-length gold gown combined the best of both worlds — elegance and sexiness. First, let’s just say that she pulled a major power move choosing to wear gold to accentuate her luscious golden locks (snaps to Rosie).

The dress was fitted at the waist and thighs and fanned out at the bottom in a more sheer fabric. The top of the dress was loose fitting and was held up by spaghetti-straps. Simplistically elegant … that is the best way to describe Rosie, and let me just say bravo for owning the red carpet that night.

Zendaya

Even at the young age of 19, Zendaya absolutely kills it when put in a sea of people with ages ranging from 20 to 70. Not only is she known as being an empowering role model for young girls, but her style is 100 percent on point.

She slayed the red carpet this year in a burgundy, layered Marchesa gown. The gown has three peplum-like layers and the material resembles something of a chunky-lace. Zendaya is a small woman, and I originally thought that a gown like this would overpower her petite structure, but it didn’t in the slightest.

The reason why I think that the large amount of fabric was not overpowering is because the bodice is tight and the V-neck is extremely flattering. Oh, and just another note, her eyebrows were ON FLEEK.

Brie Larson

I know that everyone is obsessed with the Biebs for his Calvin Klein ad, but can we all just take a minute to marvel at the beauty that is Brie Larson in a gold-sequin Calvin Klein gown? I mean she should be the real spokesperson for Calvin Klein because all I can say is wow.

When I wear dresses, I am a little more conservative in my style; I prefer to be quietly trendy than making a bold statement. Larson’s dress, even though it was more simplistic than Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s dress, stood out and made a statement of utter elegance. The cutouts were classy, the neckline was flattering, and the “skirt” portion hugged her hips and legs the perfect amount.

The gold sequins definitely helped the dress stand out, just because it is a more conservative dress compared to some of the others on the red carpet. All I have to say is, if you’re reading this Calvin Klein, plaster this photo all over the world to showcase your amazing work.

Taraji P. Henson

The fierce, beautiful Taraji P. Henson owns the red carpet in a white Stella McCartney gown at the Golden Globes. The dress itself fit Henson beautifully, showing off her rocking body. The layering of fabric provided an elegant train that made the dress stand out, since the dress itself was simpler than some of the other dresses worn that night.

The extra fabric in the back that Henson is pulling on in the picture below makes her look angelic, but her makeup brings back her intense demeanor. Taraji P. Henson embodies how beauty and extravagance are not one in the same and that sometimes simplicity is the key.

Jennifer Lawrence

I feel like I can’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing the amazingly beautiful and talented Jennifer Lawrence on a headline. I am not saying this in a mean way; every time she is in an article or interview she is complimented for being her confident, goofy, caring, and kind self.

Well, this was most certainly the case at the 2016 Golden Globes as she strutted down the red carpet, without tripping this time, in a Christian Dior bright red gown. The dress was form-fitting, but not tight, and had two cutouts on the sides.

The bold red matches Lawrence’s bold, lovable personality. The neckline was classy and elegant. Thank you Jennifer Lawrence for being the classy, funny, lovable person you are.

Jennifer Lopez

I have to say that even though everyone looked beautiful at the Golden Globes, Jennifer Lopez definitely wins the prize because just wow. Everything about her Giambattista Valli Couture gown was perfect.

The mustard color looked ravishing on Lopez’s tan skin, the cape-like neckline sat on her body beautifully, the slit on the slide was both elegant and hot, and the train in the back was classy and gorgeous.

Not only do I commend Giambattista Valli Couture for designing such a striking gown, but I applaud Lopez for owning the outfit and for being the fierce woman that she is. Never change, J-Lo, keep doing you.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum

Girls always say how envious they are of Jenna Dewan-Tatum for having the infamously handsome Channing Tatum by her side. For me, I am more jealous of Jenna’s stunningly good looks and her amazing sense of style.

She rocked the red carpet in a midnight blue, floor-length Zuhair Murad gown with silver embellishments. Even though the cut of the gown was a Deep-V, it was extremely tasteful and not too revealing.

Many people worry that colors like midnight blue will wash them out, but that was not a problem for Dewan-Tatum at all. Her dark, pinned-up locks and smoky eyes further enhanced the beauty of the gown. Gorgeous and classy … two words that perfectly described Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

Kate Hudson

I have one word to describe Kate Hudson’s outfit choice for the Golden Globes: bold. Don’t get me wrong, she looked amazing in her skirt-shirt pair and looked elegant while showing off her mid-drift, but if I were her, I would’ve worn something a little more formal to an event of this caliber.

However, despite the fact that the outfit itself was not exactly Golden Globes appropriate, she still looked absolutely stunning. The Michael Kors skirt and shirt fitted her perfectly and the color and sequins complemented her skin tone.

The skirt was body conscious, but not too revealing because of the choice in fabric. The length of the skirt was tasteful and if it were any other event I would say that she had the perfect amount of skin showing. Keep doing you, Kate!
