If you’re a student at Purdue University, you know how difficult it can be to get around without a car. But since most students on campus don’t have their own means of transportation, they look to other modes readily available on campus.

West Lafayette is much easier to navigate when you have a reliable means of transportation, so for those of you that don’t yet, here are a few means that you can look into to help make your college career at Purdue that much easier.

1. Bus:

For those of you seeking a cheap option, the City Bus is always a good way to go.

With schedules, maps and bus stops all online, you can plan out your day according to the bus schedule, and you won’t miss class or your grocery-shopping opening.

While it may not be the most convenient means of transportation, if you have the time to plan ahead and want to save a few extra bucks, this is certainly something to look into a little deeper.

2. Bike Sharing:

Fuse, a pioneer in West Lafayette bike sharing, has brought Zagster bike sharing to the Purdue University campus.

What exactly is Fuse? You may be familiar with them for adding Zipcars to the Purdue market (see below for more details), but their overarching goal is to make transportation far more accessible, and to come up with a solution to this problem that’s effective for both students and residents of West Lafayette.

And now? Fuse is the only off-campus student housing that offers this integrated bike sharing solution with the larger campus, making off-campus living that much more convenient for Purdue students.

And after the Zagster program was originally launched by Fuse, Purdue University introduced the program campus-wide, realizing the potential of this means of transportation.

It’s quick, easy and gets you exactly where you need to be.

3. Zipcar:

As mentioned above, Zipcars were brought to the Purdue campus by Fuse as well. And while Zagster has a certain appeal for students that like to get around campus via bike, those that are looking for something more suited for colder weather will appreciate this means of transportation.

Zipcars are a convenient way to get around campus. Essentially, you sign up ($15 a month for students) and then you’ll get a Zipcard. This Zipcard will unlock registered cars in the area for you to drive for the day.

You reserve a car via the app, tap your Zipcard to the windshield of the car you’ve reserved, and take the car for the amount of time you reserved it for. When time’s up, return the car to the same reserved parking spot you got it from.

It’s simple, it’s convenient and in the growing age of technology, where mobile apps are the go-to problem solver, Zipcars are an extremely convenient way to navigate campus.

4. Uber:

Of course, for those of you that want the convenience of car transportation, but aren’t comfortable driving around a campus setting, there’s always Uber.

If you haven’t heard of it yet, Uber is basically a more convenient taxi service. Uber is another app-operated transportation service, where you input your location and destination and a driver nearest you will pick you up and take you where you need to go.

So no more flagging down cabs – with Uber, they’ll come to you, wherever you need them.

Plus, you can link the mobile app to your credit card, so even your payments are processed at the touch of a button. No more carrying around cash to pay the cab drivers.

If you need a quick ride somewhere and you have a smartphone, Uber is really a no-brainer for getting around the Purdue campus.

5. Walking:

And last, but never least, you always have the option to walk where you need to go.

It’s great exercise, you’ll feel good (albeit tired), and you are on your own schedule, not someone else’s.

I don’t recommend this during Indiana winters, and I definitely don’t recommend this as your night transportation method, but for those of you that enjoy a long walk, don’t mind the cold and take karate lessons regularly – more power to ya!

So whether you’re a fan of the fresh air and exercise or just want to call a cab to pick you up from your location directly, there’s the perfect means of transportation for you somewhere on the Purdue campus.

So don’t stress anymore about how you’re going to get around West Lafayette; look out for these modes of transportation, pick your favorite and never worry about how you’re going to get somewhere ever again.
