5 Free Apps For College Students

By Jessi Stickel on March 5, 2015

Don’t you love discovering new apps for your phone? Remember how glued you were to Twitter, Instagram, and Vine when you first downloaded them, and still kind of are? Well, here are some not so popular apps that you will become obsessed with.

1. RetailMeNot

Who doesn’t love saving money? Retail Me Not is the app to have for shopping in-store to online at almost any store around. I guarantee downloading this app will save you cash you could be spending on that late night Starbucks craving! The best part is you don’t have to look up the coupons beforehand. You can pull your phone out while you’re waiting in line, type in the store name, find a coupon that applies to your purchase, and have the cashier scan the bar code right from your phone! With a couple clicks, you get 25% off of those shoes you’re paying way too much for in the first place. There are even online codes for when you’re slammed with papers and homework, and can’t find the time to take that trip to the mall.

2. MyScript Calculator

Anyone that is in a math course will be glued to the MyScript Calculator app! This app lets you write out equations with your finger right on your screen. You can write anything, from simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, to even equations with trigonometric functions. It’s like having a TI-83 in your phone, without all the button searching. So when you have to do your calculus homework, but don’t feel like carrying your calculator all around campus, you have everything you need right in your phone.

3. Pinterest

Hair & Beauty, Health & Fitness, and Travel are just a few of the categories on the Pinterest app. This app will change your way of doing just about anything. You create an account, make any kind of “board” you like, then search within the categories to find things to “pin” on your board. For example, if you want to organize your dorm room or apartment, make a board called “Room Organization,” then browse under DIY & Crafts. You could even type in “Organization hacks” to find all kinds of ideas to get more organized, like making a dry-erase calendar from a frame and paint sample strips, or cutting down old cereal boxes to keep your desk or makeup drawer organized. Not only will Pinterest help you stay organized, it will help you be creative, with the cake to make for your friend’s birthday, mother’s day gifts, cool new party games, makeup and hair tips, school projects, and even finding something to do when you’re bored. Pinterest will get you thinking outside the box with pretty much anything.

4. GoWallet

Ever get a gift card for your birthday, Christmas, or just in a care package from your parents or grandma? Now where are those gift cards, and how much money is left on them? Exactly. Hey, I’m right there with you, I never knew how much money was on the gift cards I had in my wallet, until I got the GoWallet app. This app keeps track of how much money is on your gift cards as you use them. You just snap a pic of the card with the app and it reads and stores the gift card, keeping track of how much money you have left to spend. Stop guessing or writing down how much you spent from your gift cards and stay organized with this app.

 5. GasBuddy

Ever fill up your tank, start driving again, and pass a gas station that was 10 cents cheaper than what you just paid? That is one of the most aggravating feelings. The GasBuddy app will show you what gas station near you has the lowest prices. Simply type in your zip code or use your location services, and the app will give you all the gas stations in the area, listing them from lowest to highest prices, along with their distances from your location. Why not save money when you’re coming home for the weekend, going on a road trip, or just running out to your favorite fast food joint?
