Fashion Items Worth The Splurge

By Kristen Peuvion on August 20, 2014

Trends in the fashion world come and go so quickly that it can be hard to keep up.

A difficult aspect of the fashion world is that clothing and accessories can be thousands of dollars which leaves a lot of people with this predicament: if trends are coming and going faster than the blink of an eye, why bother spending so much money on something you’ll only be able to wear for a limited amount of time?

The answer is you shouldn’t bother. It makes no sense to spend a ton of money for something you’ll only wear a couple of times. That being said, that doesn’t mean you should never splurge on some clothes and accessories. Some pieces are timeless classics that will never go out of style. These are the items worth your money.

A good rule of thumb about splurging for an item is taking the price of said item and dividing it by how many times you estimate you’ll use it.

For example, if you find an item with the price of $550, but you’ll wear it at least 20 times, the price per wear of said item is less than $30, which is pretty reasonable.

Here’s a list of a couple of items in your wardrobe that are worth the splurge!

Little Black Dress

A little black dress, otherwise known as a LBD, is a staple in any woman’s wardrobe. It can be worn to essentially any event whether it be a wedding, graduation, dinner party, a night out with friends, date night, etc.

Given the broad spectrum of events that a little black dress can be worn to, this alone makes splurging on one worth it. So if you find a LBD whose price tag makes your eyes bulge out of your head, think about how many times you can wear it and you’ll start to feel a little better.

Another incentive for splurging on the perfect little black dress: it looks good on just about anyone! Black is flattering on everyone, and not to mention, black is always in style. That being said, your look will be fashion-forward and flattering with the perfect LBD.

Watch

A watch is something most people wear every day. So if you’re using the rule of price divided by times worn, you could be down to single dollars or even cents per wear. This makes your “splurge” seem like nothing at all.

One tip to keep in mind before you go out and spend all of your savings on a nice watch: make sure you will actually wear it. You don’t want to purchase a watch worth hundreds of dollars only to realize you never wear it.

It might be good to start out with a cheaper version of what you’re looking for before you decide to splurge on a Movado watch.

Camel Coat

While a coat is going to be something you’ll wear a lot, that isn’t the only reason it is an item worth splurging on. The purpose of a coat is, above all, to keep you warm. Style and trendiness are just added bonuses.

If you live in any state that experiences cold winters, or if you went through the Polar Vortex this past winter, you know how important keeping warm is which is the reason why a well-made coat is worth the money. Forget the cheap coats with zero lining, to make it through even a mild winter, a warm, well-insulated coat is worth splurging on.

The reason you should stick to camel is simple. The color is a classic and won’t go out of style after one year of use. This will allow you to wear your expensive coat for years, rather than months.

Jeans

I think it’s a well-known fact that everyone struggles with finding the pair of jeans that fits perfectly. They’re either too long/short, too big/small in the waist, not the right wash, etc. and it is basically an impossible task to find just what you’re looking for.

For this reason alone, the perfect pair of jeans is definitely worth the splurge. The perfect pair is a rare find, so when you stumble upon it, the price should be of very little concern. You’ll wear the jeans so many times and feel so good about yourself in them that you won’t even feel guilty about spending money.

So even though there are always ever-changing trends in the fashion world, some things are constant. And even though these trendy clothes and accessories can be in the thousands of dollars, some things are worth the money.

These items are timeless classics that are worth the dent in your wallet.
